I know that bargaining can be good for you in the long run but don't expect to walk away with a sweet deal. I went and checked out a black VR in Manly about a month ago. Had 140000km on the clock but the interior had seen better days and the engine had just come out of repairs due to waterlogging, which was pretty sad. The owner was the 4th and had looked fairly after the car but it had seen better days and still had extra jobs needed to do on it. He wanted 5.5k for it but the amount of work that was still needed to be done was not worth it. We tried bargaining him down to 4.2k but he just wouldn't say yes, so we walked away. Rang him up 3 days later to Inquire again but found out he sold it for what he wanted.

Just don't risk paying far too much when it's clearly not worth it as you can't always beat a stubborn salesman!

I called yesterday vicroads and they said there's just a $32 transfer of registration, and anyway if I do have to pay the $624 of rego, this guy has it registered in NSW until March 2012, a full year. I'm assuming that the refund would be similar to the rego cost here but I don't really know. And yeah I forgot to mention the stamp duty and plates. The guy has a RWC in NSW (for what that's worth... not a whole lot I hear, but it gives an idea that not much has to be fixed at all, if anything).

Waiting the two weeks for the RWC shouldn't be too bad for me though because I've still got to wait 3 months until I get my P's. So if you take into account the refund (which I don't know how much is worth but I'm assuming it's a decent amount considering a full years worth of rego), then it doesn't look so bad.
NSW rego costs more than VIC and as with all states there is a compulsory insurance element in addition to the registration fee. From what I could work out they only refund the remaining registration fee and it seems there is some sort of cancellation fee as well, which they will take out of the refunded amount. NSW RTA charge rego fees by vehicle weight and a VR6 would be $312, so you'd get back a portion of that.

As with a lot of goverment agencies, the quality/accuracy of information they provide varies depending on who you speak to and how you go about asking questions. Just so you know the transfer fee does not apply as the vehicle has come from interstate, so VicRoads treat it as an initial registration rather than a transfer of ownership.

Hey Pat, I'm just curious as to know whether you've checked out the VR in Sunbury Vic? The car is in tip top condition, everythings working fine but Yh, it's a bit pricey. Worth taking a look at if you don't purchase the one up here in NSW. I certainly would, that's for sure.

Well done! Keep us updated on how you go with swapping the rego etc over - theoretically you can drive it in VIC whilst still on NSW plates but you may run into issues if the car is involved in an accident or similar as you're meant to get the RWC and VIC reg withing 28 days of purchase.

IMO you should take it to your mechanic to get it checked for the RWC soon, as there may not be much if anything required to obtain it. THat way if there's a 2 week or so delay in your appointment at VicRoads you won't have any dramas.

Thanks guys, yeah I'll keep you updated. We got a full comprehensive insurance cover notice for the drive over and we're booking it into Volkspower ASAP for a service/RWC. Just spent the afternoon washing it and touching it up with the leather treatment, armour all on the dash, some stuff to blacken the black parts of the bumpers, took the roof racks off and washed it all on the outside. Loving it
