pods can be pretty loud.
drilled is a nice compromise, gives a nice growl without being overly loud. + legal issues.
Not heard a BMC CDA on a VR that I can remember.

I've got the modded airbox with a replacement K&N panel filter and I love it.

yeah i did the airbox mod (like the one in rays diy) and quite enjoy it. ran it with the stock paper filter, and then got a K&N filter for it and didnt really notice much of a difference, so if your feeling cheap just cutting up the stock box and leaving the stock filter will get you a little noise and be free
havent tried a pod or anything in mine thoughsigpic

i doubt it would show much if anything on a dyno, but i actually felt a bit more "responsiveness" when i cut and gutted my airbox, wasnt expecting anything but i could definately feel it. i also smoothed out all the webbing stuff on the top of the box.
a proper "cold air intake" would definately be best though, just be carefull with puddles and such (especially if your really low)sigpic

two issues with running a pod is either heat soak if you mount it in the bay or hydro lock if you mount it down low behind the lower grill.... Go a BMC CDA if your budget allows or just gut and swiss cheese/cut the airbox on the fender side imo?.....

i think they've been discontinued not too sure, but myself, mickey and i think hawk/or matt bought the supercheap auto intakes with the carbon fibre enclosed pod. All you needed to buy was the silicone adapter pipe to make it fit. then i plumbed the cold air duct to the bumper intake grille.
Cost a bit over $200 but was well worth it considering the legality of it and the nice deep intake note it gave.

Modded airbox for me got a thumbs up in the sound, response, and butt dyno department

I had a K&N pod straight off my MAF and did use more fuel. Made good noises too.
Really noticed the difference when I had to take it back off, car was much more responsive down low, but didnt like to rev as free.
The CDA or similar would be best of both worlds
