you inspired me to clean mine too, I took the right plastic out, OMG ... there was like a pool of leafs in there..My question is the left plastic, the wipers need to come off... How do they come off ? I am stuck. Thanks in advance.

Good stuff. I suspected there would be leaves in ours, but the dirt/mud was an eye opener.

A good idea to do every 5 years or so, depending on how many trees you park under.

Wipers are removed as per Golf Loon. The trick is getting them back on in the same position.

PS...A positive by product was I found a bolt pulled through. This bolt held onto an electrical thingy (in the centre of the trough). It was only being held on with one bolt. Luckily I had a bolt the same thread & diameter and a little longer. I think I've now cured one to the "dash" rattles

Hey Maris and other Mk3ers if you goto Clarke Rubber you can buy a suitable rubber lip and simply refurbish your existing plastic trims for 10 bucks.

Those screws are a pain, I usually end up ripping em bodily from the car,
Thanks golf loon, that shouldn't be hard and sound logical. I am in the middle of scrubing dirt with a tooth brush in the engine bay. I only wanted to get some dirt off the manifold and surounding plactic, one thing lead to other then ended up doing the whole bay. Just couldn't stop.

Where can you buy a MK3 rain tray rubber strip/seal?

Great walkthrough and pics of what I understand is a common problem. I have the same issue. One question though; you talk about sourcing the screws but I assume you replaced the rubber strip/seal and possibly the raintray as well?

If so, where did you get it?

Your local VW dealer would be a good place to start

Good suggestion. I should switch my brain on before I type next time...

BTW saw the pics of your MK3 - looks great!

                  Rain tray/rubber adhesive?

                  Hi Golf Loon (happy birthday!)

I'm about to try sourcing the rubber seal between the rain tray and windscreen from Clark Rubber as you suggested but was wondering about what type of adhesive you'd suggest. Assume it has to be a good one to bond the rubber to the plastic rain tray?

As an alternative to the Clark Rubber options, I've turned up this and this that may be possibilities.

(BTW, a new VAG dealer sourced rain tray for the left and right sides is $210, so I'm thinking about a 'ghetto' fix)

I think the new rain tray comes with the plastic screws.

What I'm looking to do though, is replace my perished rubber strip (against the windscreen) that needs to be fixed to the rain tray and ensure a good seal. I didn't have too much trouble with removing the screws.
