Today I replaced the plastic covers at the base of the windscreen.

Note the broken /perished rubber trim that sits against the windscreen. Each time I touched it, a piece would break off.

First the plastic screws were removed.

          Nice work GT4!...
I was actually tinkering with the same bits yesterday, but i was replacing the ignition coil.
Anyhoo, those plastics screws didnt seem to want to come off... are they just really long or something? Or do they lose their thread pretty easily?

Haha same here, had to remove the rain-tray to get access to the nuts holding the coil down. I had to pry the plastic bits off - doesn't seem to want to screw off...

Did you reuse the same plastic screws when you put the rain cover back on? I have the hardest time with those things and have been wanting to replace them with something easier to remove.

The "screws"& the "grommet" cannot/should not be separated. Unscrew until it is no longer undoing, then simply pull the screw & grommet out.

To reinstall, push the grommet into the square hole, then push the screw home. Done!

I had bought some new screws but didn't need them as I was able to reuse all. The screws at each end are different in that they are "only" screws and do not have an attached grommet. They can be difficult to remove, so I used a narrow spatula (putty filling knife) and put the blade between the screw head & the panel to lever the screw while I used the screw driver on it. That way it came out easily.

                  I hope this helps.

I was surprised to be able to buy them thro' Solitaire Spares, but they sell heaps. Not cheap @ $209!

                    Next jobs......

New tyres. Would love to buy 15" alloys, but that is around $1100 (with tyres), and not much choice of rims (would LOVE BBS). May buy Pirelli tyres and have the standard rims powder coated. That option around $700.

Replace the front spoiler (both halves), another $200!

Then buy Carbra ($500)....then maybe take to Melbourne for Day of VW in November.

Repaint the Bonnet, grille panel & front guards ($650).

Perhaps replace front windscreen, and while that is out have the roof resprayed ($600?).

Should be a half decent car then??

Hey Louis there is a cap in the centre of the wiper arm, remove that and the 13mm nut underneath and then pull the wiper off.

Hey Maris and other Mk3ers if you goto Clarke Rubber you can buy a suitable rubber lip and simply refurbish your existing plastic trims for 10 bucks.

Those screws are a pain, I usually end up ripping em bodily from the car,

Depends on what sort of rubber you can buy to fix it to the plastic panel, and how original you want your Mk 3 to be. However, it costs nothing to go and find out. Good tip!

They come off quite easily if you take care. I had to work it out myself, but having a spare screw, I was able to see how they worked, and that in the end they need to be pulled out.
