Buying A Vr6

Ok...........Guys.

There are 2 VR6's on the car sites in the $5500 to $6500 price bracket with K's 200000 plus.

Is one buying a **** load of trouble buying one at that end of the $ chain?

What should one be aware of when buying a VR6?

My VR6 has 242,000km on it besides standard upkeep and servicing, there have been no major issues for me.

I also thrash the pants off it

I know of a few VR6's getting in the higher reaches of Km's, and they do seem to need alot more work than mine has ever needed. Mine has 140,000 on it, so i have a bit to go before the magic 200,000 km.
Im not too worried about large k's. My last 2 cars had 340,000 and 314,000 respectivly, and didn't require any special assistance.

There were at least three model versions of the VR6. <1994, <1996, >1996

Mine is a 95 model and has 250k+. It has been extremely reliable mechanically. On the other hand the very expensive electronics are trojan horses. ABS, Cruise Control are "Go Lo" quality. Many owners have had bad experiences with coil packs and electric windows too.

The other component set that wears quickly enough are the shocks/struts. Their life is 60k. And sooner or later there's going to be some very expensive fuel pumps to change and the little plastic and rubber bits in the engine bay that suffer from heat and oil vapour will leave you wondering how VW ever managed to sell these cars under $150,000. We badly need more interest from after market manufacturers but with barely 250 cars landed here in the first place its not going to happen.

Towards the end of 95 there were some important improvements beneath the skin to the electronics and suspension. I can't comment on whether these fixed earlier problems.

Ok if one went over to a Passat Vr6 would it have the same issues?

Yes you just have to know these things are part of the ownership equation. In fairness to VW the problem is really caused by their external suppliers. VW shares these suppliers with other companies so its not surprising BMW is also known to have a problem with electronic components. There are reports that Volvo have had similar issues.

It should be said too that the VR6 parts prices are no worse than those for any other VW. And a lowly Polo part may be even more than a comparable Merc bit. VW is very democratic about that stuff. Truly a peoples car.

seems to be a good time to get yourself a vr6 bargain,but from what I hear around the traps,vr6's are going through a tough time(clutches,blown heads,fuel pumps,pipework,electrical issues) they are getting old and high k's are bringing all those issues out.check the car thoroughly before purchasing.check with golf loon,he is our resident vr6 expert..

There are really good examples around and then there are crap ones, I should know my first was a dud! Just make sure that all is working properly and there is no leaks from pipes, WATERPUMPS, thermostat housing and anything else that you may find needs attention!

Also I would rather buy a vr6 that had higher kms as a result there is a chance that things have been changed and not about to go with lower kms cars!

Dont be too sacred.

I just bought a 96 VR6 for $6,400 and bought it knowing the heater and air con didn't work, the window tinting was awful...

But the aircon now works, the heater gets fixed next week, the window tinting has been redone and all up I think I will have spent about $8,500.

I intended on leaving lots of those little things until later, but a half decent tax return ment I could fix everything now.

Really they are a fun little car to drive Get one. You know you want to...

like any car, not just the vr6, the quality largely depends on how the car was treated at it's early stages in life. it is hard to judge a car based on its km's alone.

so what to look out for? well, the vr6 has many common issues regarding workmanship and quality. I wouldn't be able to list all the problems associated with the golf. if you would like to know what are the potential problems that may arise from buying a vr6, go to myvwlemon.com. or you could simply browse through zillions of post on vwvortex.com. those are your best chances of finding out what can happen.

as for just looking at the car, I don't think you could easily determine where the possible faults are if you are inexperienced. I think thats the pain and joy of owning a vr6. it can be excitingly fun or it can empty your pockets pretty quickly.

Hey thankyou for that, I am a young bloke so i will not have much money at all.. Unfortunately i have read through some of the post's on here, and i have seen plenty maybe hundreds of problems so that is the problem.. i will probably still get a VR6 i love the sound that comes out of the beast's
