  • Replaced the Sump Gasket

After watching a little bit of a weep for the last couple of years I decided it was finally time to tackle that job.

Armed with a new gasket, oil filter, filter seal and crush washer it was time to crawl under the car.

As I started to jack up the car I realised I still don't know how to get the thing up on jack stands. No clue where to jack and then where to put stands. In the end I was working with the car up on a floor jack lowered almost onto jackstands where I thought they would *probably* hold the weight if needed. Not the smartest move, but it's done now. Note to me, work out how to get the car up onto stands properly...

29 bolts later and the oil was drained and the pan was off, I had read through a couple of walk throughs but there seems to be a few minor differences, but luckily nothing of consequence.

Seems my pickup has been a little hammered:

You can see the inside of the pan has a few dents:

So it's out with the old:

    and in with the new:

And while I had it all out and cleaned up I thought to myself... why not add a splash of colour with the left over calliper paint I had

The old gasket actually looked to be in pretty good shape so I'm not sure where it was leaking but it's all back together and taken for a 10 minute drive and I can't see anything leaking.

Nothing like getting your hands dirty

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

There's no need to unbolt the tranny out either right? You can access the bolts on the tranny side without having to move it over a bit?
        Past: Mk3 Golf 2L 8V, Audi 8L A3T.
        Present: Mk3 Golf variant.

There is a small metal plate attached to the tranny you have to remove, 2 x 11mm bolts from memory, and you can get at a couple extra screws you can't immediately see.

Thats what I found too, didnt find them initially.
Mine had been weeping for a while too but I smashed it and ended up leaking 2-4L overnight so needed to change.

I had a look at the bits and didn't notice any buildup, the photo's are basically from just after the sump was taken off.

The oil is changed every six months and I don't do alot of KM's so maybe thats the saving grace.

haha yea looking at that for too long has the same effect as the sun.. my eyes are burning.

Think I gotta do this soon, mine leaves a nice few drops everytime its parked, giving the garage floor a bit of style (which the parents dont seem to appreciate)

Leaking coolant at a slow rate too

the coolant seems to evaporate so its not doing a very good job :S

does like to leave its little oil spots though
