My central locking operates very slowly, if at all sometimes, from the driver's door. The other locks drop down far faster, and it works better from the front passenger door, but sometimes the driver's lock does not drop from that side either
Any ideas?

Well the mk3 central locking uses a vacuum pump to lock and unlock. Perhaps something is blocked in the lines? Im only guessing here. I suppose talking to door trims off to see whats happening couldnt hurt.
When my central locking was slow, the vacuum pump would continue for a while after the doors had unlocked. I replaced my dying battery and has worked perfect ever since..
there can be a few different causes.
Pump can be on its way out? does it sound like its pumping healthy? usually a continuing on pump means that it has a leak somewhere. My money is on there being a leak somewhere as the plastic lines to decay. I had this problem in my car. The lines in the boot had decayed to the point where they were starting to crack. I was able to just graft in some hose i bought from bunnings in the sprinkler system section
I had a similar problem on the polo, turned out to be a leaky boot on the 'fuel filler flap lock actuator'. While I was waiting for the part I blocked it off with a screw..tried fixing it with a condom first..didn't work.
