Just a thing I might add: the factory standard tweeters are mounted on their own plastic holders so if you're planning to replace the factory splits with aftermarket splits, you'll need to fabricate your own mounts to hold the tweeter in the same position. I had my splits installed by the folks I got them from. I'll take a snap of what mine looks like just to give you an idea.

Alternatively, you can just fit 2-way/3-way speakers and scrap that tweeter idea.
I had a look at the speakers today the door speakers seemed pretty staight forward but the tweeters looked hell of a lot harder to pull out how is it meant to be pulled out?

            Muahahahahaha.....

You guys are gonna hate me

I have the optional AutoSound rear 2-way system in my rear parcel shelf surrounds, and OMG!!!

It came with 2 inch tweeter and 5 a inch midbass driver (which is mounted in an adapter plate for a 6"x9").

There are cutouts for a 6x9 or 5", 4" and 2", all covered in attractive grill mesh, and badged...

I removed the adapter plate and the 5", and replaced it with a Clarion 3-way 6x9, and soldered it to the factory tweeter. No need for a sub, so I can keep the weight down. I'll take photos of the AutoSound system when i get a camera back

Oh, and I have the cutouts for 6" in my rear doors, so I guess I have factory positions for 12 speakers

            Sorry about going off topic...

            Cheers!!!

i have got 6.5 alpine type s in front and back... they did not fit properly, the speaker cover would not go back on, so i had to take the door panels off and mount them from the back. it was a tricky job, i also had to carve a bit of the chip board off for the speakers to fit from the back...

mine had speakers in the back. when i replaced the old speakers i noticed they were all vw branded, but were not matching. they were made in different locations, looked different, different speakers, i thought this was odd...

the speakers in the back are in the worst position. i have decent speakers there that are really just going to waste, especialy when you have passengers in the back.

for the tweeters in the front i used the old tweeter holders and fitted them to the my new tweeters. it looks like they are factory fitted.

question:: so i spent a decent amount on a audio system , and i have never been 100% happy - why ? because you can't turn it up to even a moderate volume without the doors RATTLE ! those 6" dont put out that much bass as it is, and i have to turn the bass down to help reduce the noise. does anyone else have this problem? i have tried fixing this by getting some rubber strips and sticking them between the speaker and door to try and absorb vibration. hasn't helped.

so what size speakers can i replace the original ones with? I am also planning on using an ipod with a connection cable and running it through the original head unit. Is the original head unit good enough to provide good quality sound if I upgrade the speakers only? Thanks again

6.5" is the biggest u can go. Just replacing the speakers u can notice a big difference from the tinny original ones. Replacing the HU will most likely give u better quality but u can always test to see if the original is up to scratch and upgrade later.

I found the factory speakers in my vr6 were actually not bad considering. with a new headunit they produced a good amount of bass. my car had 6.5" in the front and 5 1/4 in the back with spacers.
