Figure I might as well start a build thread

Long time listener, first time caller

I gave Lorenz a lift a few years ago to pick up his Mk3, and it appears to have rubbed off on me. I noticed a couple of months ago that a kid at work's mother had a clean looking 3 door Mk3 so I asked him to tell her that if she ever wanted to sell it I'd be interested... Turns out she was looking at getting a new car so I ended up buying it last weekend.

Probably shouldn't have looked at it in the rain, its not quite as clean as I thought it was but it has lowish km's and the interior is spotless and other things can be fixed over time.

I don't really have a need for another car, but I kind of wanted something practical that would fit my wheels from my other car so it was pretty much down to a Mk3 or an E30

as they are 4x100 and I've had a few of the Japanese options already and wanted something different to share the carport with my MX5 Clubman

I had to cut down a couple of trees on the weekend that divided my carport from my courtyard so I could fit the MX5 in there and the Golf in the carport

Mission accomplished. Kind of got the MX5 stuck though, the battery is flat so I had to push it back and forth trying to manouver it around that pole and one tree stump that I ran out of time to get out of the ground, with my 13yo half-brother steering, ended up parallel to the brick fence with about 1cm clearance... whoops. Had to get the scissor jack out so I could get the trolley jack under the diff and roll it across a few inches, then when Tom got back in so I could push it back out of the way he twisted the key when it was only halfway in the ignition and snapped my only key. I was not overly happy... All good now though

    Plans for the Golf...

Bought a set of Hottuning coilovers from Lorenz and Robin, they'll go in soon

Planning on putting my SSR Mk3's on it (mainly because I like the ideas of Mk3's on a Mk3) 15x7 +26/13, but I need to get some hubcentric rings to suit them, plus some 5mm slip-ons to clear the front brakes

I've also got a pair of mesh headrest Recaros to go in it with some Mk3 rails that have been modified to fit the seats, but I need to unjam the drivers side height adjust mechanism first, its set too high and wont go down, so I fit in there about as well as I do in my old man's car (ie head tilted to the side, hard up against the roof)

I'm not planning on doing anything to increase the power, the MX5 is plenty good enough for that

I'm planning on replacing all the hoses, doing the rocker cover gasket and a couple of other things that can perish over time, new brake rotors and pads in the front and either new drum shoes or a rear disc conversion if I can find one cheap enough

Put the coilovers in over the last couple of days (had a couple of bolts that didn't want to budge, coupled with working 7 days and no shed, had to do it one corner at a time.

Still need to set the heights but I think I should let the springs settle first. As I plan on driving it as a daily I can't go too low (don't want the hassle of defects) so the rear will have to come up a bit, not sure on the front yet

I'm getting some hubcentric rings made up by a mate so I can run my SSR's, just a normal ring for the rear but a stepped one for the front because I need a 5mm spacer to clear the brakes

Then theres a badgeless grille coming, after that I'll see how its sitting and work out what I want to do next

Ahh old times....First 2 photos were taken a couple of doors down from where I used to live haha - I also worked in that aged care home for years in the kitchen. For a MK3, it looks reasonably clean from the photos you've taken and won't take too much to bring it up to scratch by the look of it!

They were hey! I made him an offer above what he sold them for, but by the time he dropped his price i couldn't buy 'em!
I hope you consider yourself very fortunate to own such wheels.

Excuse the phone camera pics, just wanted to see how it was sitting when I was at work tonight. First time its been out of the driveway since I put the coilovers in other than going around the block and straight back in to get it settled and turned around to do the other side. EDIT - replaced photos with better ones from today

I'm used to a bumpy ride (8/6 springs in my Stance GR+ in the MX5) but jesus this thing rides rough now, you can feel the back bumping around heaps, it was a nice little car before I did this...

I wound the right rear up a bit the other night (set the left rear higher when I put it in because I thought the RR was a bit low) not sure if its still a touch too low or not

i think the height looks pretty good, if anything id go lower, but thats me I also found with my hottunings that after a few days/drives they became a bit less bouncy and ride pretty good now, so as they settled they may have become a little less stiff or something, or i got use to it pretty quickly.

being able to go through roundabouts at like 60 makes it worth it though
