Rear number plate issue on my golf mk3...

Hello again fellow peoples

Have a question, just got my car registered and just realized i cannot screw in my rear plates, the only 2 holes visible on the rear are aligned in the middle of where the number plate will sit, and as vic number plates have holes around the edges of the plate i cant just screw them on.

Now, is it safe for me to drill 2 holes in the rear hatch for the plate? or am i better off just drilling through 2 center holes in my new plate to fit the old car holes...

or plate holder?...:S

Some people just use adhesive tape, which means you run the risk of loosing a plate, but seems to work relatively well. Personally I built my own mount although I can't find the write up I did when I first had this problem back when I got my Mk3.

In short I cut an aluminium pate to size, drilled two holes in that to match the car, then drilled two more holes in the top for the number plate. I also used some half pieces of garden hose to absorb the vibration. Hope this all makes sense:

Yesterday I put new plates on a Mk3 I bought at auction a while ago and I just drilled the plate. If it was a custom or valuable plate I might do it differently, but otherwise it didn't really matter to me. Just my opinion.

FYI in NSW some if not all custom plates dont come with any holes, you have to drill them yourself. Found that out on my euro plates but it makes more sense to do it urself.

Slightly off topic, but does anyone notice a slight rattle from the back that is caused by the rear number plate?

If you do, just grab some rubber strips or something similar and bolt it in behind the number plate.
