Anyone with a magnaflow exhaust...

just gonna put it out there, i just want an exhaust that sounds ace AND doesnt drone. both points being equally important.
are there any rules of thumb to getting rid of drone? ie. not going 2.5, more resonators, bla blah blah?

Sometimes that just isnt possible. Also if its a vr6 we're talking about then you want to keep the revs low, lest you chew fuel like madness.

I am very keen on trying to discover the no drone rule of thumb. My current exhaust is on borrowed time until I can get something that doesnt drone like crazy at 60kph.

AFAIK a 2.5" system with two resonators and a backbox shouldn't be too bad. Mine's 2.25" and it's got one resonator and a backbox, and some will think it's too loud.

I've currently got that set-up, and its still to loud. I'd go three mufflers and a backbox tbh...

I have had the suitcase muffler removed and the rear muffler replaced with a free flowing 'S Bend' muffler and I think it is great. I don't get much drone at all even at 60kph in 5th. I wouldn't want it much louder and my exhaust shop said that a straight through rear muffler might be too much. The only thing that I would still like is the twin chrome tips, but we had problems with the note from the split tips.
I will try to get a vid of the exhaust this week.

Thats exactly what I have and it's still loud (although not as bad as it was before)!

I personally like the the way the Magnaflow exhaust sounds on the VR6 as it is not aggressive at idle and smooth and throaty under load, without being buzzy or obnoxiously loud. I find the fit to be better than most of the cheaper exhaust systems available up here in the States. The only other exhausts that I found to be on par with the Magnaflow systems were the Thermal R&D systems, which coincidentally used private label Magnaflow back boxes and resonators before Magnaflow manufactured cat-back exhaust systems of any sort. Unfortunately Thermal R&D is no longer manufacturing exhausts for MkIII's. IIRC the Magna Flow system (like the Thermal) were designed using lowered vehicles so that there would be no rubbing or rattling from the rear "over axle section" of the exhaust.

Regarding the drone: I personally don't think that the sound or drone is overly intrusive. If anything the mellow hum will put you to sleep on long drives after a late night of knuckle-busting on a friend's car. If your car has an open element style intake you are going to hear that more under aggressive throttle applications than the exhaust.

Here's a link to Magnaflow that has three vids of the exhaust in action on a MkIII VR Golf including an interior vid. I know it's really hard to convey the true sensation of the exhaust in the virtual realm, but FWIW, I think the Magnaflow exhaust is and excellent choice overall.

Interesting about it being designed for lowered cars. I have read people posting about their exhaust clanging on their axle when severely lowered and going over speedbumps. They should've got a magnaflow.

You can say I had the inside scoop. I used to work for Thermal R&D and all of the test fit cars were lowered vehicles and from the Corrado up to the MkIV Golf/Jetta/Bora were all friends' cars. I guess you could say that the useful lowered car info was sourced from an enthusiast, which was then gleaned by Magnafow from my former place of employment/former customer.

My magna has never clanged and my car is moderately lowered. I still dont like the drone though. I'm not sure whats causing it. Perhaps my car is special. Maybe its the extractors?? Who knows...
