daily vr6 driver
here's my two cents worth:
i'm an advocate of using the vr6 as a daily driver - it's a great little car.
look after it, but don't spend any money on silly aftermarket bits. and you don't need to spend $70 a litre on oil
drive responsibly - it's no fun to hammer any car around all the time anyway
but it's nice to have that extra torque there when you need it
i don't really understand it when i hear people talking about getting another car as a run-around. doesn't make any economic sense to save a small amount on petrol by spending alot on the rego, depreciation, maintenance of another car...
and lastly be humble. if you want a sports car, get a little japanese sports car - not a 10 yr old german hatchback.

I get similar fuel economy out of my 2.8 v6 Volvo most of the time, 15l/100, but it has K-Jet and I have a heavy right foot...
Gman- Mk1's and 2's are sports cars, and are a heck of a lot stronger then a japanese equivilent, plus this is a VW forum, sacralige!!88' Volvo 760GLE
88' Volvo 740 Turbo

No offense, I love my little VR6, but I have driven no car that comes close in character, fun factor, poo-my-pants factor, sex on wheels factor, than my old RX7. That was the hottest car I will ever own (unless I suddenly become very rich and buy myself a 911 Turbo or some such fantasy car). My old man recently bought a 2001 M3. Awesome car, but after owning it for 2 months he said to me "you know, this car is an awesome package, but for sheer thrills, drop dead gorgeous looks, and all the attention of a rockstar, nothing beats that old RX7 of yours. Only draw back with that thing was the killer fuel bill".
The VR6 fits exactly the mould I was looking for when buying this car: a cheap, economical, comfortable, practical, *reliable*, *rare*, middle ground car with 4 doors, no turbos, and a little bit of "go" to appease the boy in me - the perfect daily driver!

fair point about mk1s and 2s - they're probs much more nimble than front heavy vr6s
but one addition to my previous point:
vr6 is awesome daily drive unless...
its got a yechy torn seat base - does anyone have (or know where i can get) a black cloth front seat base for my vr6?!
hehe oh how i can only try...
gman.

Wouldn't waste my money, not again. Just not the same drive as vw whatever mod it is.
And as far as depreciation and rego goes....well as i'v noticed 90% of people on this forum have more than 2 cars or claim to anyhow,
If you LOVE the VW your 1st thought should be, that's if you want a second car as a daily. Go and buy another vw.
I drive my mk1 16v as a daily driver, don't want to, though at this point no choice.
uses half the fuel as the vr6 does, goes faster, a ball of fun to drive to work everyday, feels like i've stopped at dreamworld jumped on a rollercoaster then get out to start work.
Can't get that out of jap crap.
jap crap only good for (work) car or scap metal to build new VW. lol.
Cheers Dave

OH!
And guys it's how i feel.
Just read the post now that it's submitted, to read it i realise it sounds like my voice is raised, but it's not.
So please don't take any offence, those who have jap crap
I'd by one again, but only in hilux or landcruiser form, though the rolla sportivo's appeal caught me a little, just to find out that they stopped making rolla sportivo in 04. So to me that was a sign of a company that's still trying to find the
the seclet to that feeling of when you pull up at home, and it takes you a minute to turn the car off cause your not quite sure??......... Ahh! stuff it i'll go for another drive..........
the same feeling you get when you eat tim tams. JUST ONE MORE. LOL
OH! And yes the vr's are about the same economy as the vl 3L though in smaller form.No not fuel hungry, just that some of us need operations to remove the the large slug of lead in our right foot.
Here's a few things to check.
Tyre pressure go that extra pound higher. assuring not to over inflate.
Get your fuel system cleaned with interject, or similar.
Change your oil frequently. and filter...
make sure things like spk plgs, HT leads, (rotors and dissy caps) for those who don't run coilpacks. are all in good order. Quite often leads and plugs won't show signs of failure, So would change these if they've done at least 50k as all these things together make for beter fuel economy and performance.
Cheers Dave

There is not 1 jap car that has any sex appeal or rockstar looks.
Just cheap parts!
You want sex appeal W12 GTi, you want poo you pants factor, ask someone to take ya in a moded mk1/2.
And for an overall great drive car in any cond.
Just jump in any VW/

G'man, i think you were wanting people to bite at this one . . . so here i've bitten . . . Before purchasing my VR6 I was contemplating buying a civic typeR, thanks too DohcDave's ear bashing on vdubs i ended up with ma vr, and am very very very very happy with it! I wouldnt hesitate to say its a sports car, run it up against any other stock "japanese sports car" and it will beat them if not kill it! I know cuz ive done it, in a straight line and also through the mountains . . . also build quality come nowhere close . . .
"not a 10 yr old german hatchback"? you make that sound like all "performance" Jap carz are new? Majority of the true sport jap cars are the same age if not older!! and age so much worse!! . . .
I'm buying another dub as my daily because i'm going through about 80bucks a week on fuel thats a tank and quarter, every week without fail and averaging round 10.5L/100. + I have a few k's and i think things are gunna start breaking ++ I wanna build it uplol
If you (somehow) drive it safely and sennsibley you shouldnt have an issue with it being a daily . . .
