VR6 as a daily driver?

Mine is a daily, dont know how you guys are getting 18L/100k

I'll get 10l or even 8l/100. I dont drive much (200k a week?) as I take a train to work so I only fill up once a fortnight. Still... i dont see a VR as a fuel hungry car.

My old mates highly modded rx7... now THAT was a fuel hog. When it idled at the lights there was a visible pool of fuel vapour around the rear. You could easily empty out a full $50 tank of 98RON in a hard evenings fanging about... sigh... those were the days

Besides the obvious fuel costs, what else makes driving a Vr6 40,000kms a year (as I do in my 2.0 litre, not gently!) an expensive prospect. Tyres? Brakes, chew clutches? All the plastic coolant fittings and all that heat generated under the bonnet? I'm desperately trying to justify including a vr6 in my garage. I know whats great, whats not?

I've only just replaced my clutch after 195k so i dont think clutches are an issue.

probably just the plastic coolant fittings and maybe the oil cooler.

pommie golfer. If you are wise you will bring the car you have in storage back home here and smile about how many looks you get and how little you spend on petrol. Then when you are sick of it, sell it here for a packet.

Wise words there Matt, the clutch is what meant to last 120 000kms to 150 000kms, mine lasted 145 000kms and I changed it in December.

Golf Loon, i know your right.....and when i can i probably wil bring the mk2 here.....only think i am worried about is someone was telling me the other day that the emissions, regulations for bring cars over to Oz have bcome very strict and it could be that you bring the car all the way over here to find that they wont allow the car to come into the country....can anyone shed any light on this...

The reason I get 16-18l/100 driving to work is coz its 5km, I never get out of third or over 40km/h, the oil only gets to 70degrees before I am at work, and there are around 30 speed humps and 5 brazillion gear changes along the way. Normal "city" driving I get 10-12.

I owned 2 Series 8 RX7s when I lived in Japan. The "best" fuel economy I ever got from a car was when I used half a tank (~30L) in 30mins fanging through the mountains - 1L/min! I think it was around 40-50L/100km.

When i was buying it, i actually put fuel economy in the VR down on the pros list, as i consider it very much an economical car. I drove a 91 magna with a 2.6 four cylinder in it before this, and dodgy as the engine was i averaged 15-20 L/100km in it. Now in the VR6 i fill up every second Wednesday and that lasts me 2 weeks, usually driving about 500 km in that time. so thats roughly 10/11 L/100km for me. NOT using the golf as a daily driver seems silly to me.

i guess the pleasure you get from driving it daily outweighs the cost of fuelling the beast....

Its a personal import, you have owned it for a year or more overseas and thus can bring it without restriction. It will have to meet Aussie compliance, which may mean you have to get a couple of child seat anchors fitted, couple of hundred bucks. Thats it.
Bring it. I`ll buy it off you down the track if you feel a bit skint

THATS ME! i had a 92 magna 2.6 before the VR6. the VR6 is so much more economic than the magna that its not funny.
My magna was about 15-20L / 100km, And the golf is Around 9L /100km most of the time.
