  • its the crappy phone photo and was also only the first day, by the time i got it home it was really quite bad, had too wash it twice. Gave it a polish and a nice little "detail" while I was at it today. I'm not actually sure if the speakers are aftermarket or original, I'm thinking after market though unless there was a higher audio option or something when they were manufactured. I just have blank grille things in the back doors and there are a small set of splits in the plastic bits that the parcel shelf sits on (im sure theres a word for it but cant think of it) with like a 4 inch or something speaker and a tweeter. Don't think I hurt them too bad actually, but distort with any real volume/bass now (not that they made a great deal with initially)

Really wishing I had some cash right now, with the aussie dollar being so strong, have audio all planned out :S

    • Planned out, like a proper install with say Alpine and Blaupunkt?
Or just a field day at your local Supercheap/Autobarn

Wish I could upgrade my audio system, Ive got discintergrating Alpine 6x9's in the back and POS Fusions in the front.
You could 'just' buy a few things whilst the dollar is strong.

      • id install myself but am planning a fibreglass box moulded to one side of the boot for a 10 inch sub, a decent sub (alpine type r have caught my eye), and a relatively cheap 2 channel amp I can bridge to power the sub, but then use for the front speakers when I buy a real monoblock sometime further in the future. then some quality front component speakers (not decided on these yet) and some dynamat in the front doors, something for a little rear fill and then all would be good. already have a decent head unit in there, and the front speakers sound pretty good really so for now id just like to add a sub to get that bit of kick.

looking at heaps of brands at the moment, and mainly from american sites (it works out a fair bit cheaper then local places seem to do, even though shipping costs almost as much as the parts) but yea will probably hit up jb and maybe some local audio stores and such and see what sort of prices they can do before i order, would prefer to support local people. but then again when there is a big price difference ordering from the us seems logical. Have a set up id love to just hit order, but then i remember i have $40 to my name and get depressed again

        • We built a system using a pair of 12 inch Type R's (aswell as Type R splits and a big Alpine amp) that has been in three of my cousin's cars now, the Type R subs are really nice. I doubt you'd be anything but happy with them

              • Ok a little update, have spent the last couple of days working on this thing somehow.
Bought a can of satin black engine pain, a tin of "vht niteshades" and found the bottle of forever black. Spent more then a few hours just masking and coating every plastic/rubber part on the outside of the car with forever black, and if i may say so myself it looks amazing, makes it look much younger then it really is.

If it was black and i couldnt forever black it, its been given a couple coats of paint. Painted my old front vw badge and painted the "VR6" badge aswell, joey modded the headlights, painted all the wipers, painted the muffler, painted the outside of the top of the airbox as it was quite scratched up from when i smoothed the inside and i also "tinted" the front indicators/dummy pannels, side markers and the rear brake light in the spoiler.

                anyway a few happysnaps

not entirely happy with my attempt at "joey-modding", what ever i did i couldnt get my masking tape to lose enough stickyness to not take the reflective bits with it (also lost alfew little shiny bits :/) so did it by hand with a paint brush and it is far from perfect, although once the lens is back on its hard to see the errors.

                p.s. niteshades is a bitch :/

                looks so tough without headlights/grill/indicators

Also "fixed" the back window with the broken regulator which kept sliding down

What is it exactly that you did with your headlight lenses?
Whatever it was they look better too now

A VW with nice dark black trimmings, the way it should always be, always looks amazing.

                  • i gave the lenses a good wipe down then stuck them back on although theres a little dust in there now somehow -.-
Painted the non crucial bits of the headlights black though to give it a sort of smoked look, like so: (this is rayrays pic from his diy, which was very usefull, as i didnt take any while the headlights were apart)

the indicators were sprayed with vht nightshades to make them look black although still let light pass through. Not really happy with them though so not sure what im gonna do with them just yet

and yea black trim makes all the difference

                    • Yeah it's a bitch masking it all up. I've learnt to use glad wrap instead and then just cotton-budding off overspray with acetone to clean it up. Works well.

Good effort though, looks mean on a black Mk3!

                      • Ahhh I see now, quite a nifty little mod with a nice effect.

Be a little bit careful with blackening indicators as depending on their mood and how loud your car is, Police can get you on small stupid things like that.

Their was a girl in the bay whos car was written off as "un-roadworthy" by local police because the "parkers" where to bright Go figure

But I like how they've turned out on your car

                        • thanks ray, your DIY was incredibly helpfull, I wouldnt have attempted doing it without it. The cars actually blue not that anything can really be seen in the crappy phone pics haha. Plan on giving it a wash tomorow, grabbing a real camera and getting some real photos.

And yea ryan I'm not looking forward to getting pulled over, its gotta happen soon though, have been less then half the legal ride height for almost 2 months now with no trouble

the nightshades sort of cracked the first time i did it, so i sanded it all back and repainted them, and it cracked again a bit on one of them, its not obvious until you turn on the indicator, but then it just looks quite stupid. It comes off with paint thinners and stuff so i might make them a little less dark, the light still shines through them pretty well but yea If a cop was having a bad day im sure I could get in a bit of trouble.
