Haha I promise you it is tight! I even used an allen key to hold the strut still while I tightened the nut down with an open ring spanner. I then looked underneath the top hat to see if there was any thread left to go down, but no - the top hat was hard down against it's stopper...

in my first method, i mean using the car's body weight to compress the helper spring, but it doesn't seem like that's the issue. i'm not sure if you actually need that aluminium top hat and just need the top mount.

are you using hand tools or do you have air/impact tools?

Yeah, springs compressed or not, that top hat thing isn't gonna go down any lower. I am using hand tools, and ghetto ones at that.

Figured I may as well update the thread, if anyone cares. The ole spring compressors made easy work of the thin oem rear springs and I got the spacer tube off the old suspension. It was exactly what I needed and the rear coilovers now sit in the strut towers like they should.

As a future reference to anyone with this or any other brand of suspension, if the rears are ill fitting then you may need to get the old spacer off the oem suspension. Or you could cut down the spacer provided - have fun with that. I will worry about the fronts next time I have some spare time.

So had a quick go at the fronts, this was the result.

Bearing in mind the very top is not all that tight yet, is this right? I may just hand tighten it best I can manually, then drive to my neighbour's shop and use the ole impact wrench to get it done better. How many mm should there be between the top of the strut tower and the top cup thing?

Yep that's normal if the car is sitting on the ground.
