A quick question for all you veedub geeks, nerds, nuts & fanatics...i have turned on the car with the airbag disconnected and after reconnecting car is now showing an airbag fault, would this only be because the car was on with airbag not fitted or is it more likely that i've damaged the clock spring? i know its a silly thing to have done but i've done it ok so enough already

While it always could be the clock spring, once you've set off the warning it needs to be cleared with VAG-COM or similar. See if you can find a friendly member with a cable to clear the fault code otherwise it's off to a dealer or other equipped repairer which could cost you a few $$

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Gavin (H100vw) may be able to help you out with a VAGCOM scan and see if he can clear the fault code.

If you have cycled the ign with ANY airbag component disconnected you must use a scanner to erase. Disconnecting the battery simply wont work. Any good scanner will do this, Vagcom being the tool of choice, Launch, hanatech, Autologic, will all do the same job.
All you have done is created a high resistance which the ECu has picked up on, basically its so high because its open circuit. It will erase no worries
