    Volkswagen Golf VR6 (1992 - 199 : A GTi FOR GROWN-UPS

    Models Covered: 3 and 5dr hatchback 2.8 V6[VR6, VR6 Highline]

    BY JONATHAN CROUCH

Back in the late 1980s, Volkswagen spotted a market niche. Buyers were starting to move away from Golf GTis and into more expensive sports saloons, like the BMW 3 Series. The draw of a smooth and powerful six-cylinder engine was proving very tempting for many. The six-cylinder Golf VR6 appeared in 1992, and was an instant success.

At a stroke, it won back old customers and lifted the Golf upmarket. A new benchmark for high performance hatchbacks had been established.

With the demise of Volkswagen's former performance leader, the Corrado, many new Volkswagen buyers now turn to used versions of the six-cylinder Golf. It offers storming performance in a compact package. New, the VR6 was always well equipped and so most older cars also offer quite a good standard spec. Expect to find power steering, anti-lock brakes, alloy wheels and traction control.

Many cars have the optional Highline leather trim and air-conditioning. The latter tended to be popular, as heat-soak from the engine was observed in many road tests the result of a big engine in a relatively small car.

Early cars offer brisk performance for relatively little money. Performance figures of zero to 60 in seven seconds and a top speed of 140mph attracted many an enthusiastic first owner. Expect to pay £1,500 for a 1992 J three door and another £100 for a five-door model. For more recent examples, such as 1997 P-registration models, £3,300 is fair for a car with 73,000-odd miles.

Add another £150 for a five-door model. Highline specification (96N on) adds £300-£400 you be the judge if leather n air are worth a stiff asking premium.

Volkswagens, generally, have a name for reliability and excellent build quality. The Golf is no exception, though it's always best to have any high-performance car thoroughly checked for accident damage and telltale signs of an over-enthusiastic former driver. Unevenly worn tyres, graunchy synchromesh on second gear and worn-out shock absorbers are all evidence of abuse. Engines are fairly unburstable, but do check for oil, coolant and power steering fluid leaks. Inside Highline models, check the leather upholstery for excessive wear and damage and ensure the air conditioner delivers chilled air immediately after starting the engine both items are expensive to repair.

A full service history is highly desirable, especially one from a Volkswagen main dealer. It may be a Volkswagen Golf but it's certainly a more complicated car than its smaller siblings. Parts are readily available from Volkswagen dealers and not overly expensive, when you consider the almost-supercar performance of the VR6.

(Approx) For a new clutch, expect to pay around £55. A catalytic converter will set you back £450, while the exhaust system itself is £220. An alternator is about £500, a headlight £65 and front brake pads £60.

This is the area where a VR6 will really make you smile. Though some journalists gave the car a bad press for alleged under-damping and soft springing, many owners preferred this set-up to that of the firmer-riding Golf GTi. The VR6 is one of those rare cars that is equally comfortable on a winding B road, in traffic or else sitting at a constant 70mph on the motorway.

Near-supercar performance wrapped in a sensible Volkswagen package. A lot of car with a lot of speed for not a lot of money.

500 pounds for a alternator wtf?

im not exactly sure what your saying here... but yes as with any car this age things might break and it can be expensive to replace parts. That one on ebay doesnt look too bad, might even check it out further myself >=]

Yeah Hoontime, a VR6 is nearly a sportscar and lots have been thrashed by young people. Parts are expensive as it was an expensive car new. They are also now getting old and so lots of parts need replacing. Not recommended if you are on a tight budget. Clearly you are Mr Hoon, so get a Golf 2L or 1,8 or a SEAT GTI. But anything you buy for a couple of grand will have issues. I`d pay $4k and get something better.

Or lend cars to their teenage children.
All VR6s are old and parts are expensive.

I'm hoping when I buy this car. it wouldn't need super expensive ($500) repairs or parts replacement.
definitely do a racv check to see any future problems

To anyone from interstate or in other areas of Melbourne, I can go and have a look at this car and report back if you would like? It is only about half an hour from me. I'm pretty curious to satisfy my own curiosity on it to be honest.

dont forget this is an auction and will probably not go for 2500, it probably has a much higher reserve then that anyway.

Although VR6child if your really bored and wanna go check it out for your own sake, and report back that would be nice, but its pretty likely i wont be bidding anyway

RACV check is a good start...
When it comes to parts, $500 isn't that expensive. I think you have very high hopes if you are trying to find a VR6 for $2500... I think you are dreaming really... You would be hard pressed to find a MK2 for that price.

                      Back on topic.

If your already worried about how much the parts/repairs will cost for an old car. Especially with a limit of $500

I'd recommend staying away from anything European!

^ take note of this as VR6s are an awesome buzz box for getting about town but the cost of VR6 ownership is never low. You can purchase a low mileage, single lady owner car, driven only to church on sundays and it can still turn around and bite you in the butt with a $4000 repair bill.

A lot of people will offload them because they have big impending repair bills.

Like i say to everyone that looks at them. You buy one because thats the car you want to own. They really can be a lot of fun. but be willing to spend money to keep it running and be willing to get your own hands dirty.

As people have said teh VR6 isn't likely to be a cheap car to own. Even a clean and tidy one is getting on in age and is likely to need parts unless the current owner has already replaced them all. Remember these things are 15 years old now. I have spend thousands on mine, everything from random sensors, MAF, power windows, suspension, water pumps, steering bits, exhaust, heater core, air conditioning... If you want something with all the work done think much closer to $10k

I wasn't 100% prepared for it, but have loved every minute of it anyway

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.
