    Thanks man, thats good news!
Cos i chipped the 1st compression ring on the 2nd piston now too haha
anyone know of a place that sells piston rings? the pistons i have are 82mm Kolbenschmitt pistons with the rings that they came with.

Since i cant get the hang of mk1turbo79's tool that he sent me, cos im a bit of a nufty, ive decided to butcher a regular band compressor to give it a 15 degree angle on it. Ive searched on VWvortex and thats what most people do over in the States apparently, so im gonna give that a go.
Ill tighten the band compressor around the piston, somehow mark what the 15 degree angle would be on the bank with a line or cut of some sort, and get a grinder with a cutting blade on it and cut out the wedge out of it. Ill make sure it sits absolutely flush with something thats been machined before i try to use it. We'll see!
and ill try put pictures up tomorrow!

It should only be 7.5deg cut, rather than 15.

One bank leans 7.5 degrees from the center line and so does the other. One side is not inclined at 15 and the other zero.

Use a Linisher rather than a grinder to remove the metal on the ring compressor. These are more gentle and have a nice flat area to work with.

          Good luck.

thanks pete! i worked it out in my head as i was falling asleep that night i posted that haha
either way through work i found the vw tool 3278 which is a plastic funnel type thing which is meant to fit pistons to AAA and ABV engines. its up in queensland at the moment but its on its way down today i think.
i couldnt get mk1turbo79's tool to work so my boss had called up head office and found out where the genuine vw tool is. there are three in australia by the way!
my injectors were damages coming out of the manifold so im sending them to James at Four Season Tuning, he is sending his from his corrado to get reconditioned and he will send me his, along with enough rings to finish putting the pistons in. they will be grant rings so not the kolbenschmidts that all the others will be but thats just the way its gonna be. apparently kolbenschmidt cant seem to understand that people break rings to you cant buy rings without pistons. so people use other brands when they break rings, like what im going to have to do. whatever, as long as they work!
so im expecting to tool tomorrow or the next day, and the James' injectors and the rings in about a week and a half. then i will get the last piston in and ill bolt the head back on and get back into it.
god what a freakin hold up!
it was full steam ahead until getting the pistons in, then hit this freakin wall!
its ok, ill get over this wall in a week or two and we'll be firing on all pistons...hopefully.
i should put up pictures soon.

              YEAH!
that tool didnt work. the rings caught in the plastic. whatever!
as a last resort i used my mind, some broken tooth brushes and the wooden end of a hammer. and now i have 5 pistons in with no more broken rings! I WIN!
now im just waiting on a set of rings for one pistons from James at Four Season Tuning. Along with his reconditioned injectors but if the injectors are going to be a few more days to be ready then ill get the rings sent by themselves since they are the only thing holding me up at the moment.

              once again...YEAH PROGRESS!
gonna send Colgate a letter with thanks for making their tooth brushes so good for this sort of job!

                    Ok!
Ill cut to the chase, here's the pictures.
                    Clean as clean!

                    Black on black!

                    More new bits
Stage 2 Gripforce clutch, thanks to Loons suggestion
New chain gears for all gears except the crank (its part of the crank so cant replace it)
and some other stuff to make it new/BETTER

This inconspicuous hole is MEANT to hold a little oil squirter, lucky we noticed it before we bolted it all back together or the...7th...i think...crank bearing would have gotten a little more than hot, as pretty much all oil pressure would have spewed out this hole!

                        Startin to come together

mk1turbo79's ring compressor sleeve which i couldnt figure out how to use correctly

                        1st compression ring broken

                        broken oil ring

VW special tool 3178 ( think thats the number) got from a dealership in queensland, through work, this didnt get the job done either! the rings still catch on the walls of the sleeve

                        Steven's Special tool # WIN-Colgate

got James from Four Seasons to send me some Kolbenschmidt 82mm rings he'd taken off another set of pistons. that guy is a legend, he even sent me his own injectors later after having them rebuilt for me.

didnt paint the whole thing unfortunately, i'd thought the engine covers would cover the parts i didnt paint. they covered most of it but not all, ill tape up and spray the rest when i can be bothered (probably never)

                              oh yeah

unfortunately the day that the hail hit melbourne was the day i was putting the engine back in on its mounts so the back of it was hanging out the garage. the left hand rear quarter panel got a couple small dents but nothing bad. maybe 8-10 all together, mostly in open panel areas so ill just get them fixed by the dent guy that comes into work.
as the hail hit i tried to get it back inside real quick and dropped the car on the drive shaft which i hadnt positioned right for the engine to go in and all the balls of the cv joint came out everywhere. that thing is a massive pain to get back together

                              all back together!

                                Bummer about the hail.

Have you taken it for a drive yet? Get that pod right down into the inner guard with cold air feed for some nicer air I reckon...
