Are you a slave to your power windows?

For the past three days we've had temperatures in the 30's here in Adelaide. As you can imagine the interior of the golf gets pretty hot and with a leather interior it doesn't make it any easier.

I purposely leave the windows up and swelter through the heat until I get to my destination purely because I am too scared to open the windows in case they break again.

Does any one else do this at all? Or am I the only dumb one here?

I dont worry too much about the windows. My drivers side is up and down constantly and still seems good (touch wood!).

As long as your aircon is good, then keep the windows up... unless you smoke in your car when driving...

Aircon needs a regas lol I don't use it

I just use them, if they break I'll fix them (again)

Having said that the passenger side front has been replaced with a good second hand unit and the drivers side is new Being I only really use these I'm not worried.

There is a little piece of brittle plastic about half a centimetre thick that supports the weight of the glass in the window all by itself. This has broken in 2 of my windows and I had the local engineering joint make me up a nice strong metal replacement part and now they are good as gold. I flippanty put my windows up and down like a yo yo; with full confidence.

Having trouble with drivers side rear , i know how you feel.after my mechanic adam [ va garage] spent a lot of hours on it with 3 different motors works then stops take it out of door lay it on side works again tested wiring seems ok any way got another wiring loom on its way

I've just replaced the passenger side one again...in 6 months. Needless to say I sourced a new regulator and put the old motor on there. Nice and easy, nice and new....win.

The motors don't tend to die, just the regulator. Usually the wire inside the mechanism snaps or the plastic wheel in the middle of the whole thing wears away from years of movement.

AFAIK they fixed the issue in the MK4 with a metal wheel on the inside so they tend to break less (although they are newer so maybe they just haven't got to "that" age yet).

The mechanism itself can be had for not alot of cash and you simply drop your old motor on and away you go again (hopefully for about 10 more years).

I used to feel that in my GL, but the I was broke by the end from that car. I have the same mentality as some other people where I will continue to use them until they die, and then swap them over with one of the remaining pairs of window regulators that I still have. I've replaced both rears which were dead when I got the car.

It also doesn't hurt to have a complete spare set of door cards as I do, although that would hardly work with you guys with leather interiors...

I use mine without a 2nd thought. I dont drive the car daily though.

You wouldn't happen to have any photos of it at all??

No I don't; sorry. It is very obvious when it breaks. I remove the part and tape the window shut while the engineers make me a new one. This does involve taking the door interior off but it is very easy. Just like playing with lego.

I've got one that's broken at the moment. Rear passenger window dropped, the culprit as we all know is the plastic holding the cradle to the regulator system. What do the engineers make a replacement for? the plastic that breaks or the entire cradle?

Just the cradle bit. Take the whole part to the engineers place though cause they will attach the metal bit effectively. Take the bit that broke off too and just explain to them what you want. They would do much more complicated jobs than that all the time. Engineers know heaps about how strong stuff is and how strong stuff needs to be so you might not even end up with exactly the same thing that I got but the aim of the game is to get the bit that breaks made out of metal so it doesn't break.

My driver side window does occasionally stop working. This sucks. All other windows work 100%. When winding down the windows all at once (using the key ) the drivers side window is 1 second slower - when it works.

Regulator or something else?
