Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • !!! spark plug lead position on distributor cap.

Changed my leads, spark plugs, rotor and cap today. I labled the plugs 1,2,3,4 so I would remember which order to put them back onto the distributor cap. However, when I was putting them back in; I was thinking "I'm sure this is the wrong order.." But you know, I did label them and I can't be that stupid to stuff up 4 little labels.

Well was I that stupid? I turned the ignition and got spluttering/weird noises then it died. I tried once more, same thing. I am not going near it again till I know they're in the right order.

Can anyone tell me the right order? Or does it differ? Helppp...

    Thanks! tom.

...and what about the leads on a VR6?

      On a 4 cylinder they go 1. 3. 4. 2.
Clockwise from the lead nearest to the corner of the block if your dissy is in correctly.

VR6 coilpack has numbers next to each socket if you look properly

Off the top of my head, If you face the engine and number the plugs from left to right, top to bottom you get:

        1 2 3
        4 5 6

Then on the coil pack you have:

        4 3
        5 2
        6 1

        Does that sound about right?

edit: Looks about right from what I can see in this photo too:

Not quite mate, looking at it the cylinders go left to right crank pulley to fly, so it would be start 1 top, 2 bottom, 3 top, 4 bottom, 5 top and 6 bottom can only naturally be this way
          So like this 1 3 5
2 4 6 this is how it is on the engine in this arrangement
          Cheers

So I changed the leads round so the order was 1 3 4 2 and now the engine will crank but will not start. Have I caused some serious problems?

Ok with 4 cyl engine there is a golden rule in my book. Find number one first. Doesnt matter how the dizzy has been fitted wrong or not. Turn engine to Top dead centre, firing on number one, where the rotor is facing that is number one, doesnt matter how or where the dizzy is, its number one. Number 4 will always be straight across form that ALWAYS as these 2 pistons go up together. So you have number 1 lead on, straight across from that on the cap is number 4 no need to check that as its a given. So really the only 2 leads you can ever mix up is 2 and 3, so get 2 and 3 wrong simply swap them over and thats it. So the key is get number 1 right, you cant get number 4 wrong as its always across from it so yeah 2 and 3 are the only 2 you will mix up.
                Hope this makes sense.
