  • VR6 automatic disaster.

    Terrible news.
I've owned the car a week or so, loved it, fining it extremely comfortable, loving the perfect condition of the interior and excellent body.
Running great, satisfying power and so much goodness.

In the last few days, the reveres gear has been slipping.
Just got a call from the automatic specialists I took it to last night after work, they tell me the tests they've completed all point towards catastrophe.
The reverse clutch is probably gone, meaning the box will need to be removed and opened up, just to determine what's wrong.
Best case scenario, ~$1500 for a new reverse clutch and re-fit.
More likely scenario, $4000-$5000 for a full rebuild!

Mega sad face time, I feel completely shattered and feel like smashing my face against a wall.

    **** **** **** **** THIS ****ING SUCKS **** ****!

        Don't gimme that ****!
Yeah I pretty much told myself not to get an auto, also told myself "auto's don't **** up as much as people say, what are the chances that this one will".
        1:1 apparently.

Didn't see the point in a manual VR6, I don't really see it as a sports car, just a small car with a big engine and horrible steering geometry.

I have a spare VR6 auto box thats taking up space in my parents garage. Its out of a low mileage car but im unsure of its condition as it come from a car with severe damage so never had a chance to drive on it.
If its of any use to you let me know. Your Auto specialist may be able to check it out or something.

I reckon go manual. I got a replacement manual box, plus a brand new clutch in mine for $2000. Mine was manual to start with though.

yeah a manual conversion may be worth investigating. It would be cheaper than a complete rebuild ud think

Maybe, I would rather stay auto though.
Wouldn't mind a tad more reliability though. Just a little bit.
I was loving the cruisyness of automatic, rediscovering my hip-hop roots, actually invested in some good speakers and all.

Yes the auto's break and yes they are expensive (and painful by all accounts) to repair, but assuming it's done right you should see another 10 years out of it (considering the first one lasted this long).

Personally I will always buy manual, although the wife much prefers auto so thats what her car is. Every time I drive an auto car with decent power I consider for a brief moment that auto wouldn't be all that bad. Not as much fun, but nice and lazy

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Hey mate, sorry about the news

Its not a VR6 but my Mk1 Golf is an auto and after a few months of driving i broke teeth in the pinion in the diff and basically had to find a new box, i felt shattered and know how you feel. I looked into a manual conversion and just didnt have the money or time, i found a gearbox thanks to 'jaffa' here on the forums and had a mechanic fit it. All up cost under $900 to fix and im dubbing again!

Take Tim's auto box and have it fitted, maybe have it serviced...
Hope all goes well, and dont let it get to ya!

                      Cheers
                      Alex

I'm not thinking of the VR6 as sporty because it's a boat compared to my other car.
FF and manual isn't a good combo in my eyes.

It's about a 20% chance that i'll opt for manual, for instance.

The other day i put my GL into reverse and started to roll forward, put in park then back again but still rolled forward! Bit scary as my older brothers car thats for sale was in front of me. But then i turned the car completely off and restarted and it worked. I know my auto box is dying a slow, painful death. I'm just hoping its more slow less painful. When it does die I'm gonna get loon to convert it. And once i learn to drive manual

Don't want to be quick to throw statements, but for safety I'll ask two things..

-Have you driven a manual VR6 properly before, and
                            -What's your other car?

I'm not sure if you've been living with Lotuses and similar or something, but it's definitely not as bad a combination as you make it seem to be..

I once test drove a brand new BMW 130i (thanks to a mate who works at auto classic! ) then got back in my dub. Boy, what a way to make a car feel like a nose heavy pig! But you're right, they arent that bad a car (unless he owns a 130i?)
