I should have expanded a little more...
I want to know how people have thought about doing things...

Intercooler setups - installing intercooler piping, finding a path, cutting of the bumper reinforcement to fit the cooler, etc...
Engine management - Stand alone, chip, etc...
Turbo matching - expected power vs boost rpm vs cost
Exhaust manifolds - make your own or buy (remembering 8v's are a counterflow designed head vs US 8v spec crossflow)
      Intake manifolds
      Comp ratios
      Fuel supply
      Clutches
      Diffs

I think about this often, I have enquired at workshops here is Brisbane, basically for the cost it seems a 1.8t from a mk4 would be a possibility, that would probably work out better in terms of reliabilty and bolt-ons gains. Then I begin to think about spending 10-15k doing up a Mk3 Golf and it puts me off. I love my Mk3 though so who knows, If someone can suggest a reasonably priced turbo option??

You dont modify cars because its a good investment thats for sure.
My car has probably cost me over 2x what it is worth so far and i havent really done much to it! Still doesnt stop me. It does become an addiction i think :p

              Tim,

You are right, I spent $2k when I went out to replace a tyre recently, I came home with 4, and some wheels to fit em to. I must be tired this afternoon, long day..spending feels good!!

all of the stuff from the US is built to suit LHD and their ECUs have all sorts of extra emissions crap so their software setups dont seem to suit. Youre better off looking to the UK for more accurate information. At least they have the steering wheels on the right side of the car

you have to be careful with the VR6. the only off the shelf manifold i have come across that is RHD compatible is the Audspeed/SPA Turbo one. They both use the same casting. The turbo sits nice and low on the passenger side of the engine.

EIP manifold is compatible too. But depending on the side of your turbo.
