  • "Weird" thing I found with an intake mod..

I knocked the dust ot of my standard panel filter yesterday (as I was fixing a few minor lighting issues for rego and just did a few other small things while I was at it), and noticed in the first "pipe" section, a section of black plastic grate.

I figured all the small particles would be caught with the paper filte, and bigger ones weren't going to get through either, so out of curiosity a mate and I pulled it off..

Total operating time with this setup is less than half an hour, during ths time my MFA read my fuel economy as anywhere between 12.5 and 25.3, with regurlar, quite massive fluctuations....

Theo nly thing I can think of that has changed, is the air flow past my MAF is now turbulent giving faulty/inconsistent readings and sending the ecu/injectors crazy. I then don't understand how a piece of bent 304 from the thottle body with a pod filter on the end wouldnt do the same thing?

Any thoughts? (Sorry about all the text!)

your dead right there mate - the idea of the grate is to encourage a less turbulent kind of 'constant cross sectional flow' area directly before the AFM. the effects of removing this are really going to be anyones guess, as it depends on a lot of variables - what the different readings to to the fuel/spark maps, and also how these changes affect performance and economy. For instance, on the mk5 diesels, its generally thought that removing the grid improves performance and economy - but this is i would think more plausible on a diesel than it is on a petrol engine, since hte diesle just needs lots of air nad fuel to make a big bang - no mixture control, so to speak.

i would almost bet that removal of this grid alone would in most cercumstances cause an increase in fuel usage on the vr.

i was about to create a new thread on something similar to this.

my box is modded with a cold air pipe and cut out sections and lately my car has been idling crappy and the consumption reads crazy figures anywhere from 15-30 l/km.

so has this happened due to the airbox mods?

For the time I've known you I've known your car having that setup...so unless the MAF just died, I'd put it down to something else. Crappy idle for me was leads and spark plugs, and even my coilpack. Poor fuel usage could put it down to the fuel filter, and it could also most certainly be more than one of these things. Unfortunately they're those ''common'' things on VR6's that need replacing at this sort of time frame mate!

MAF was replaced about 16,0000 kms ago ,plugs and leads replaced very recently and mechanic said could be a fuel issue so we'll find out soon i guess most likely a fuel issue

You mean the grate that's in the MAF housing right?

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

If by replacing your MAF you paid like $300 then that's fine...if it wasn't at least 150 then I don't think you'd have replaced the actual MAF itself!

I'm guessing it could be a fuel filter, or the possibility of a fuel pump but I doubt that.. My money (if an item is what's causing the problem, and not the air/fuel ratio) is on filter

I do indeed Aaron. Just before the sensor itself. Fuel economy is back to normal now. I wish it didnt sound soo good so I got better miles
