*urgent* problem

Hey Guys,

Im in the process of changing my coolant and I have struck a problem.

I have empty all the old coolant out and ready to give it a fluch out with water, but when I go to fill it up the water does not go in. Its just sitting in the reservoir. So im not sure what to do.

I emptyed it for the bottom of the radiator im wondering if this was a no no ?

just start the car and it should get things going. to get air out dont forget to park ur car on an incline so the reservoir is the highest and pinch the top radiator hose then rev the car (only a bit), then release hose and stop rev.

No, you have done it correctly but was the engine warm when you did it? If not then the chances are there's still water in the block.

They do seem to fill slowly and the best thing I find is to run the engine as you pour in the coolant. Then as soon as you see it backing up knock the engine off before it burps it all out.

Just pour it in slowly.

If you still want to flush it, fill with tap water and warm it up before dropping the bottom hose again.

Also worth running the hose through the heater matrix too. They never get cleaned out and collect loads of muck over time.

Yes the car was cold when I drained it

I have warmed the car up, but yet it still does not want to take any water ?.

I fill it to max and leave the engine runing and nothing happens it seems like it is going in a little bit as warm water is coming out of the over flow part at the top of the reservoir. but other than that it nothing goes in.

I clamped off the top radiator hose and still nothing ?.

is it to much air in the system ?

How much coolant actually came out when you drained it?

quite a fair bit, maybe 7 litres something like that. I have been runing the car with the hose in the reservoir and the lower radiator pipe off and its all clear so im assuming there is no coolant left in it.

Still no luck. I can poor about 2 litres of water into the reservoir then it wont take anymore water its just starts squirting out of the overflow pipe at the top of the reservoir. same thing when the car is runnig but the water gets really hot. have had the car runninf for neally 30min with heater on and still the level of water in the reservoir still wont go down.

I have tryed all the sugestions but still nothing.

I have had a idea.

My heater has not worked since i have had the car. could the thermostat be buggerd ?. The car always ran at norml temp.

Most likely just a bypassed heater core that started to leak, although it would be worth checking that it hasn't just been blocked off which would be a very bad thing. (Mind you I would suggest that if it's run at the right temp it's probably done right, but still worth a 5 second look).

You have to wait for the fan to kick in for the thermostat to open, This will suck the water through from the resevoir.running the heater makes it take longer to warm up, if the fan kicks in the thermostat is working .

I persisted with all you tips and techniques and have come up trumps . Car is now all good and I can stop worrying.

I think that was my problem I did not let the car warm up enough for this to happen.

It shouldn't be bypassed. If you had to do it because it was leaking, the 2 hoses that go through the bulkhead need to be joined together, NOT blocked off.

I know mine's been completely bypassed, but I don't know how lol. If you look at your engine bay firewall, towards the right-hand side underneath the expansion tank you'll see two hoses (or in my case, two holes for hoses to clamp to - ~15mm diameter) next to each other that actually go INTO the firewall. That's the heater core.
