  • VR6 MSD coil setup

well guys my VR6 has recently packed in its coil pack.

so instead of going for the oem replacement item i have decided to do the x3 MSD GM (part n#8224) swap.

been doin a bit of reading on other forums and, if done well, turns out to be a neat, reliable setup.

parts for the setup have been ordered, watch this space for a lil write up on the installation

anyone here in Aus done this mod? id like to know their thoughts

more info here on good ol vortex http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3057180&page=1

special bracket for the 3 coils was about 100 US shipped.

and for the 3 coils was about $220 AUS shipped.
every other connector, wires etc are a repco/autobahn/pabs store.

turns out to be around the same price as a oem coil pack. mind you i did get quoted $500 from an ignition specialist here in tas and about the same from imparts.

Sounds good, I was considering doing this some time ago but my VR6 needed to run properly before I could start playing around with things like MSD coils. As for OEM coilpacks you can get them for around 190AU posted from Ebay.UK...

What are you going to do about the bracket, also what about the lead adapters for the coil ends of your leads?

yea i was looking at coil packs on ebay but have had bad experience with oem replacement parts for the VR on ebay.

ordered the bracket from gruvenparts.com. I was going to attempt to fabricate one myself but this one is powdercoated and stuff. less work hahaha.

I have contacted MSD about the lead adapters as i currently have magnecor leads and would love to keep them.

yeah it's that bloke in adelaide or melbourne or something...

i was told MSD's were waaayyyyy too expensive but this is totally affordable! I would have done it otherwise.

Keen to see how it turns out Eric!

                mk1turbo79 is his name.

He was very helpful about it when i asked, this is what he said to me of his MSD set up:
                "Yes they are MSD coils (MSD #8879) about$80-90 each, so much cheaper than any of the standard replacement parts (genuine, beru or bremi). MSD products should be available from various performance type shop in melbourne. Other parts you will need are;
Either MSD or topgun lead (depending on budget)
90deg HEI MSD boots (#3311 or 3320 will do) for the coil connection
some type of connector to go onto the plugs, i have used some bremi standard type connectors with 5kohms(will get the bremi number for you tomorrow) or MSD #3301
                Various electrical terminals
And also a coil mount form gruven parts in the us, or one you make yourself.
You can buy lead sets that are supposed to be the right length, but they are not, they are relatively cheap though (I got all my stuff from www.fourseasontuning.com , James was really helpful)"

i am still yet to put this information to any use ha! one day maybe

Steve, you still haven't put the stuff together? I got the msd number wrong, not 8879, but 8224 for the coils.

I have been running the setup for about a year with no real problems. Execpt some minor crackling and popping through the radio when cold.

not long till the parts are here so I started the wiring.

seems like alot of guys on vortex had a problems with this setup, destroying their ignition control module and frying their new MSD coils.

could be caused buy bad wiring...

so after soldering, shrink wrap etc, i got it done.

pics so far. doesnt look like much but when the other parts come in it will make more sense.

nah i havent done it yet! pathetic i know. i imagine ill do it when i rebuild the whole thing at the end of the year. there wasnt really a rush to do it since there isnt really any pressing need to do it since the current coil pack isnt cracked or anything (touch wood), but it is definitely going to happen one day.

a guy at work is going to show me how to wire it up correctly cos im useless at directions, for example, the ones on Vortex.

was there any real advantage to you doing this modification? other than cheaper coils when they bust? i think you'd said your idle was a little smoother. anything else?

Yeh like i said, little smoother idle, marginally improved throttle response and power. It isn't the mod if your hoping it alone will increase power.

i have decided to go ahead and start this project, im just hoping i would be able to get the parts required over the counter rather than over the internet
would anyone know what shops would sell these parts
i realise i would have to order it in
                            im thinking maybe bursons
