vr6 compression test

  • vr6 compression test

    ok so i did a compression test on my vr a week or two ago, with a little depressing results.

    cylinder 1 3 5
    pressure 185isd 175ish 180ish

    cylinder 2 4 6
    pressure 175ish 105ish 85ish

    note, the pressures are in PSI.

    obviously its going to be either the rings or the intake or exhaust valve seats that are causing 4 and 6 to have such lame compression.

    are there any reason for this? perhaps it gets hotter there than in other parts of the engine with the coolant bits near number 6?

    what do i do next? some sort of test to see if it is the rings or valves?

    planning to rebuild at around 200,000km, im at about 179,000km now, and just want to start making a list of all the crap im going to replace while im in there.

    are these compression results comparable to what other people are getting when they test?

    i would first be inclined to find out if anyone can bore your vr6 motor?
    no one in New Zealand can do. This not saying it cannot be done in Aus.
    Due to the angle of the engine no one has a jig it can fit on.

    If only a hone is required than no problem there.

    I'm almost considering that buying a new short block would be less hassle and possible cheaper for you?

    I know Sump, Cam chain, Gaskets, Guides rings and also bearing from top to bottom. Is not far off, like only around $500ish from buy a completely assembled short block. Could be worth you looking in to that.

    As for your low compression on 5 and 6. Either rings or possibly headgasket.

    Did you check the compression with the engine cold or hot?

      There is a test to determine wether it's rings or valves.

      Roughly, it's got to do with doing the test and pouring say 30ml of oil into the cyl and then doing the test again. If the compression jumps back up, it's rings, if not most likely valves.
      I'm not 100% sure, but that's roughly it. I'm hoping someone else can confirm this...???

        ya a new short block might be an idea actually. would make it easier with having the car off the road too, be able to have in off for just one weekend instead of takin it out, doing the work, waiting for any additional parts and then chuckin it back in.

        toying with the idea of makin it a 2.9 or a 3.0 or something too. still gotta think how far i want to take it though, i could just do that basic rebuild or i could really take it to another level, but i dont know if i can justify that at this stage in life, might just make it somehwhere in between.

        Jarred, ive learned something about the idea of putting oil in the cylinder and comp testing again, at school. though i dont know if this is harder to do with a VR engine because of the angle of cylinders, ie. not being flat so the oil gets spread out evenly around the rings instead of pooling on one side.

        anyone know how much a short block or even a long block might cost or where to get one?

          looked around on here and on ebay, there are no vr6 engines, short or long on sale on either site as far as i can see.
          america has plenty, but thats america. buying from ther wouldnt make sense

            Mate I'm anxiously awaiting the verdict from the NRMA regarding the possibility of repairing my car...if it's a write off I might have to buy another VR6 and swap all my parts over so I'll have an engine for sale. I'll keep you posted if you like!

                  They tend to wear out the rear cylinders due to the rocking of the pistons and the 15 degree angle between the V.


                  You can take it out to 2.9 with Corrado pistons but another engine will be a simpler fix.

                  The other thing is a conversion using a 4 motion engine.

                    Just on that note... the 4motion head, would that not just slap straight on top?

                      Cylinder leakage test will tell you exactly where the pressure loss is mate, just means you need your tappet cover off to be sure your cam lobes are up on the fire stroke. This is THE only test and the best to verify.

                          Well you wanted the answer of new short block VR6?

                          Well here it is, you can get 2.8 - 3.4 vr6 short block or long block.
                          You can get a long block including full cam work and port and polish and all that.

                          shortblock 2.9 is only $2300US. Pretty cheap for a 2.9 bottom end. and its Fresh, ohh think of the torque if you went to a 3.4 vr6. WOWOW
