  • oil question for VR6 owners

I was wondering what weight oil people run in their VR6 12v because there seems to be a lot of different options. If any other VR6 owners could post with what oil they use that would be great. Just the weight and brand is fine. Hopefully it'll be a good reference.

Have always run Mobil 1 5w50 in my VR6's.

That's my personal preference. I'm sure others will chime in.

      I've only ever used HPR10

Myself and a few others on here seem to be doing fine with Castrol GTX2 20w50. I know myself and Hawk use it because finer oils get burnt away in our VR6's. After a service and even with a bad rocker cover gasket, I've hardly lost any oil and my engine itself feels perfect!

At the moment I'm using Penrite HPR15 which is 15W40 if I remember correctly. I've had no issues and I don't loose much.

I`d use castrol magnatec, synthetic oils are a bit thin for the VR6 and is a waste of meney as the engine was not designed for em and most vr6 motors are a bit worn now.

Just make sure you change the oil filter if changing grades / types of oil.

Yeah GTX2 here after running a fully Sythetic oil for a while. The Fuchs I was running was great except I was burning a bit of it. GTX2 seems to have solved most of that

Oh, did I mention it's cheap too

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

I'm using Castrol edge sport 5w30, and after 1500k's there is no difference in the oil level and this isn't pussy footing around either...

Why do we have the exact same thread every few months? Use the search function.

As for upholding my end of "what oil?" thread tradition, I use Penrite SIN15 (15w-40). It takes absolute hell and my engine doesn't burn a drop. Probably overkill but I <3 my dub.

I was running Castrol Edge Sport 5W30, but switched to 10W60 on my last oil change as it was burning off too much of the 5W30. Plus, I thought it was a good idea due to the hot oil temps I was running at the track (142 degrees at Eastern Creek! - an oil cooler is at the top of my shopping list) as it is meant for high oil temps in turbo cars.
It seems to be running well and burning off a lot less oil - 6000km since last oil change and hasn't needed a top up.

I've also been using this but I think I will go back to mineral oil. Can I just change it in the next oil change or do you need to flush the engine first before swapping synthetic for mineral? I read that it's sometimes not good to flush old engines because the deposits inside help seal the combustion chamber etc.

Also, I heard if you jack up the VR6 one side higher than the other, more than 5L of oil drains out. Any truth in this?
