  • Auto VR6s

    Just wondering how owners of Auto VR6s find them, painful to use or decent? Good on fuel or awful, just after some experiences as there is a nice Colour Concept for sale but its auto.

    When I was looking, I was advised that an Auto VR is a dog.
    I would envisage poorer fuel consumption and a noticeable drop in performance.
    I would also imagine that putting an exhaust on an auto VR6 would sound better than most cars, though "not quite there".

    It's your decision, but I am having plenty of fun in my manual

      Another issue with the auto is the replacement/repair cost. Much more expensive than a manual and I know the 4cyl auto box is prone to catastrophic failure that includes a very large repair bill. Not sure if the VR6 box is any better but would still be much more expensive than the manual option.

        The autos cost lots to fix and are slower than the manuals.

        I have converted a few autos to manuals and its not that hard.

        If you get it cheap and drive the auto till it dies whilst saving for the conversion could be ok.

          I have an auto VR at I have found it not too bad.

          The fuel consumption is pretty good I get an average of 350km per tank. The power is not too bad either, there's enough power there also to keep most people happy.

          Coming from owning two manuals it's a little harder to get used to and admittedly you can't fly around twisties like a manual car, but they are still a fun car.

          My biggest advice is don't let anyone else's opinion of a car influence your decisions. In the end you make the decision whether you would like the car or not.

            I'm guessing here, but what's the ball park manual conversion worth? $2kish?? I'd factor that into the cost of this car if that's what you really plan on doing. If it works out too expensive, look elsewhere.

            If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

              $3k mate. Gearbox is $1k, then you need shifter maechanism, pedal box, hydraulic clutch setup, new clutch, mods to the wiring and a shed load of labour.

              But to buy a secondhand auto you are looking at $2500 installed minimum and it will break again.

                Why is everyone so against autos and wanting to convert to manual ?
                If your gonna convert to manual , do it properly and get an o2m , the 02a is a weak gearbox .
                Only reason I see why Auto's fail is lack of oil changes and abuse , otherwise they are a fairly good gearbox .

                    You advised me against a an auto. At least leaving it auto anyway. I didn't have the money to convert it to manual, and ultimately have come out alright.

                    For clarification:
                    02m = 5sp out of mk4 GTI
                    02a = 5sp manual VR

                    ??

                      6500 for a nice yellow Colour Concept on 18" Works is pretty decent in my book.
                      But then when you factor in the conversion cost then its getting close to the 10k for that mint burgundy one thats going over here with the Schrick Manifold. Decisions, decisions...

                        That yellow one has been spotted quite a lot round Perth, have seen it a few times near my work but never got a chance for a close look or chat to the current owner. Seems a pretty decent price if he only wants $6500, but that's without any other info on the car... good luck in your search Jash
