Yep, fixed an air leak and mine works passably now. Not perfect, sometimes it take a couple of goes to start (which could be the switch) and it doesn't always resume (so you need to reset the speed) and ocasionally you hit a bump and it turns off. But haing said all that it works 99% of the time.
For some reason VW decided they had lots of spare vacuum pumps so thought putting them into the Mk3 would be a good way to get rid of them. They also decided to make things interesting by putting all the tubing and pumps in the least accessable places. Seems the designer was feeling particularly malicious that day...
Anyway, to "test" the system I would recommend this:
Phase 1:
1. Turn it on. You may or may not hear a relay "click" when you do that.
2. Tap the brake or clutch pedal, you should hear a "click" when the relay turns off.
In short your testing to see if the electrical bits are doing their job. If you do hear these clicks, excellent, move to phase 2. If you don't hear the clicks, either your not listening right or your cruise is well buggered.
You can try cleaning the contacts in the stalk, but failing that I don't know.
Phase 2:
1. Pull our the washer bottle.
2. Pull out air pump... it's wedged nicely behind the front quarter in a hole that like ripping your figers apart.
Give it 12V and see if it runs, if yes, move to phase 3, if no, give phase 3 a bash anyway before bothering with a replacement pump.
Phase 3:
Grab the vacuum hose and suck like mad, you should be able to tell if there is a leak from here. If you think it's working have a mate feel the accelerator pedal since thats what it's pulling down. If it's moving, hook it all back up and hope for the best.
Good luck finding the leak. The pipes run past the battery and into the front arm/rail thingy on the passenger side, from there I assume through the firewall and to the pedal. Most of this you can't get at. I was lucky and the crack was *just* as it goes into the rail so I was able to cut/patch/replace some piping to get it going.
Electrics would be hard if it's anything other than dirty contacts.
Pump is easy enough to replace.
Leak in the line looks hard, but you never know, I didn't have to find out just how hard. Another option would be to get completly new air line and run a seperate linr yourself and hook it up. I had to do this to get the air con recirculate valve working again without removing the entire dash so it's possible.

Well i'm trying to figure out what parts are needed to install cruise into my vr6. It has every extra option expect cruise control and sunroof. Mine even has heated leather seats. which i'm sure you guy have too.
Well if i could get a chassis code from anyone that has cruise factory fitted to there VR that would great this way i can try and get the correct parts and hopefully cruise control the VR.
I'm also still waiting from Dub20V for the mk4 GTi thorttle body, so i can cruise control my gti too. Yeah i know i'm selling it. If it gets sold before the throttle body turns up, i'll simply install it into the girlfriends mk4 GTI.
But would be nice to use the cruise and my VR for road trips.Audi S4 (2001) - Imola Yellow
