  • Window Regulators

The drivers window went bung this week and unfortunately Mr Golf Loon didn't have a spare, the alternative place wanted $220 for a second hand unit so I thought it would be worth trying VW Spare parts...

For basically the same money McGrath (I shudder when I say that) will sell you a brand spanking new window regulator, minus motor. A few screws and the motors swap over easy enough, a few minutes later a nice quiet window opens as smoothly as the day it rolled out of the factory.

Anyway, the point being that if your motor works, for not a great deal more than a second hand unit you can have brand new gear giving you (hopefully) another 10 years of electric window love.

Many thanks to Matt @ Camden GTI for doing all the actual work

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

I was pleasantly suprised at how nicely the motor slipped into the new mechanism.

We usually end up swopping over secondhand and brittle bits at work.

Worth noting that the $220 for the genuine vw mechanism is the trade price, retail would be a bit more.

Aaron is correct though, the newer bits will definately last longer.

There are regulators for sale on ebay for US$29.95 plus around US$50 for shipping!!
I bought one a while back and the OEM motor was not an easy fit - got it working anyway and it worked trouble free until my 5yr old destroyed it after only a few months...so much for that

The next reg I buy will be genuine - they always fail when it's raining or you need to lock the car - not worth the hassle
