Future of my VR6

Hello all,
I have owned my VR6 now for about 1 month, and I think I need to make a decision as to where I am headed with this car

I recently cracked something behind the steering wheel, which caused the airbag light to come on. My mechanic estimates that the cost of repair to this part is $400.

Anyways ... I have 225k kms on this car, bodywork is like a golf ball due to hail damage, there seems to be some kind of whining/noise which could be water pump(?).

Is the VR6 a car worth keeping for long? If I am going down this path, then an engine change(what should I also get done during this process?), suspension upgrade, bodywork repair should be in the pipeline.

The alternative is to sell it in 1-2 years, and look out for a Mk4 GTi.

what do you guys think?

I'm in the market for a GL or VR6, and basically I see it as a GL getting me around town cheap, or a VR6 as an expensive hobby that will need constant attention.

So before you bought the car, did you know that it would be costing you lots in maintenance?

If not, then sell it. However, if you are prepared to invest a bit of cash into it, I'm sure the rewards will be decent.

I have actually owned a GL before, and the VR6 is lower maintenance.

Perhaps my GL was just in a bad state to begin with.

Anyways, the issue was not about the maintenance, but rather this:

Which is better:

1. A done up VR6 (new engine+suspension+bodywork+other bits)

or

2. A Mk4 GTi

id keep the VR6 and sink some money into it, gotta love that engine noise and the mk3 is a cool looking car...
also you can turbo the VR6 and turn it into a 400hp animal! what more do you want

why would you need a new engine? sounds to me like you just need some solid advice about whats actually wrong with the car

If the bodywork is in a bad state sell it and buy a mk4 GTI now. Cheaper in the long run.

My advice: live in the now, do what you want to do. If you become really unhappy with the vr6 then by all means ditch it for a mk4 gti.

A mkIV GTI without a doubt, I just saw a MKIV GTI with 92k on the clock go for 10k flat at auction, you could even get one for 8-9k if your lucky...

VR6's are holding their value though...

Vr6's also hold their own....ie faster than a fatty gti

Like everyone has said it all depends on how much you like the VR6 and how tempting a mk4 GTI is really...I bought my VR a bit blind and despite the fact it's given me a bit of crap I have (only just) stuck it through and I'm enjoying it now

I have to say that the VR6 is growing on me.

In terms of quality of construction, how do the MK4 Golfs compare to the MK3s?

At this stage, I have to say I am leaning towards looking out for a MK4.

I didnt mean mk4 diesel, I meant diesel in general.

BTW ... prices for a mk4 GTi are about 15K onwards at carsales ...
