    Yeah just re-iterating what Jondarren said...check hoses for leaks. My VR6 wouldn't run without a vacuum for the idle and I didn't know this until my mate went and bloody blew it up. Leaks suck.

        since i hate trawling fora & finding threads with a problem but no report of a solution:

        it's now been a couple of months so i can be pretty sure its actually fixed...

        it was the (new) crank angle sensor having failed

        got a replacement part under warranty

            Has it already been swapped out for the new one? I was going to suggest to wrap insulation tape over it to try and stop it from wearing out and short out again. I had the same problem with mine and it got to the stage where I could not start the car at all.

              ah nice one on finding the fault. I'm feeling that my crank angle sensor is on the way out so seeing as your new one failed and gave the same symptoms as i was getting, its pretty sure to be that.

              Where did you get yours and how much $$$?

                  I remember I was quoted ~$400 from the dealers. Keep in mind this is just a sensor! Basically a cable with a plug on each end. This particular sensor on the 2.0L is only on the later models (ADY engine code) and NOT on the earlier (1994?) models (2E). The sensor is located just under the oil filter (slightly to the left). Using Jondarren's picture, I've highlighted it with the red arrows on the bottom of the picture.

                  I managed to buy a second hand one from Matt (Golf Loon). It was still intact and the wire insulation wasn't flaking off but to make sure it won't fail me ever again, I wrapped it over and over with insulation tape. A year on and I've never had an engine electrical problem; the car starts fine every single time, idles at 900rpm always and engine rpms have never been jumpy, even on a hot day.

                  I made a note of the part number but I've misplaced somewhere... sorry guys. Shouldn't be too hard to find with ETKA though.

                  Hopefully this should be sufficient to help you guys out. This was the one source of all my bad start and engine cut-out problems for the first 2 years of ownership of my dub and having it cut-out during peak hour traffic on Parramatta Road on the day of that APEC meeting was probably my darkest hour - I had even contemplated selling it at one point!

                      I was about to list my recently purchase '96 Golf GL for sale when I saw this thread and thought even it I don't know engines I should at least give it a crack

                      Ok so my situation sounds very similar to mhewitt but for the record.

                      Car started to drop revs and almost cut out during driving (intermittently doesn't seem to be any pattern to it).
                      Started to happen more and more until revs would drop in and out violently (not fun when doing 100kph ) but then go on the rest of journey like everything was find. Then it managed to start to cut out and stall when not in gear or moving.

                      Took it to the garage and they couldn't fault it but did the following just to be sure (these guys are trustworthy, they have serviced all my cars well);
                      4 new spark plugs
                      1 can throttle/upper engine clean
                      1 ignition switch replaced (it was pretty lose)

                      They also took it to an auto electrician to have the switch diagnosis done and he couldn't fault it.

                      Everything was good for a massive trip up the mountains and back but the next day just driving in the city is started to happen again. I kept driving and it cut out completely (including loss of power steering etc). Trying to start it straight away generally worked no dramas in the previous cases but on this occasion it just could not seem to start (certainly the starter motor was working etc but the engine could seem to hold and run). I just left it and walked back home to try later (there may have been some language involved). Sure enough, came back 1hr later and it started no problems. Drove it up the hill that it cut out again in the driveway (well close enough ) I had it towed back the garage the next day. Naturally the couldn't fault it but did the following;

                      Replaced suspect EFI relay
                      Cleaned all connections at fuse box

                      All was good for 2 weeks and then it started to cut out on the freeway (about to leave on a big road trip!). Dropped it back from 5th into 4th and it made it to a mates place who was kind enough to lend me their car (brand new 2009 Golf FSi. Seriously, very impressed with that car... I totally could not afford one ). Anyway, back in the 90s where my car lives , I bit the bullet and figured a VW garage might have better luck faulting it. They tested it and could not fault (and charged me one arm and a leg for nothing ).

                      No joke but, drove it out the garage and stopped at a set of lights and revs dipped at idle. Didn't stall but enough to make me drive back to garage. They said there was nothing more they can do unless it faults more. Drove it home and it didn't fault. Have not driven it since cause I'm at a loss at what to do.

                      So I'm armed with the Golf and Vento Haynes Service and Repair Manual and I'm going to have a shot at this crank angle sensor. Is there anything else I should be looking out for, will also check the hoses?

                      Thanks for the pictures and wish me luck. The life of this Golf depends on it, it is a great car apart from this one little/big thing.

                            i had this same problem with my GL. i narrowed it down to something with the hall sender. then i gave up and got a a vr6 WOOOOOOOO!

                              So far... so good

                              So the good news, as mentioned a few weeks back I had the crank angle sensor replaced even though it looked ok and what do you know.... 2 weeks and no further issues.

                              Fingers crossed cause I could now own a Golf that is worthy of a road trip holiday!

                                could be ur vacumes, happened to mine, cost me 200 to get it fixed n is fine now. same symptoms
