...crack pipe should have been changed and not leak.
I think that crack pipe is next on my list, just have to get it up on a hoist to check things out, but I still think I have a small leak
To give you an idea, I have replaced the heater core, half the AC system and one window reg... oh and the head lining. For what I paid for it I'm still damn happy.
If the parts that people have mentioned have not been replaced AND are not broken, consider that they may not be far off breaking. It's not an issue if they are dead, after all if you replace them and look after them, you have about 10 years
If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.
If you're seriously looking for a VR6, just go and drive some. If you get a feel for a good one (maybe someone on here can help you out) you'll know what's what when it comes to their performance. As everyone has stated, check all the little things that break. Ask lots of questions about their replacement of items, especially if the k's start to reach 200,000 because the timing chain will be either replaced or will need to be (most of the time..) at that stage. Just things like that. You should be sweet if you've got a resaonable knowledge of what is what and the types of things to look out for, so go get one!

I've had my VR6 for a year. Had 167xxxkms when i got it. Had to change the oil and rear brake pads when i got it as they seemed to have been missed in the 'service' that the car yard carry out on all their cars.
I've put 14xxxkms on it now and other than the cost of a service every 10 thousand kms or so and a new set of plugs just cause i wanted to i haven't had to pay for any repairs.
Everything works, even the cruise control (when the car is warm... not sure what goes on there) and it drives really well. So as far as i'm concerned it's reliable, touch wood!
I drove my aunties new Holden VE SSV yesterday and i would still rather my golf.
To be honest I'd say if you buy a good VR6 the only things you might need to replace are those things you don't need, especially if you don't have the extra money to fork out for it. Unless you REALLY want your heat...hahah

There is a bit missing here :
Coilpack + leads
Intake breather pipe
engine mounts
oil pump
ignition switch
rocker cover gasket
rust is now starting to come out on most in the door rubber at the join and also some around front and rear windscreen
drivers inner cv boot seems to be a common thing lately too
crank angle sensor
I think thats about it

I agree that Mk4s are nice... but they are down 24bhp on the Vr6 and are 8.8 secs 0-100km (same source as before), which takes the edge off it a bit. I'd go straight to a Bora 4Motion after the VR6 then Mk4 R32, but they are getting into big money. VR6 and then save for a blower would be 2 cents. I looked for quite a while for my VR6 and decided to cop one with bigger kms because it seems to have had a better life, despite the on paper devaluing of the k's.
Either way you go Golfs seem to be a pretty safe bet, there aren't over 25million of them because they are crocks....
I wanted to get a bora 4 motion but the power to weight ratio seems a but better with the vr6 and I was very dissapointed
I have 2 friends who are rice burners through and through. Both own hotted up rex's and are into club level motorsport. I let them have a go in my vr6 when I first got it and they couldnt stop hollaring! This was back when it's was stock, they havent been in since all the suspension work + bmc cda, etc. Doubt i'd be able to wrestle the keys back off em now!
