    Hey Guys,

My mate is looking at buying a vr6. couple of things we would both like to know..

    Hp?
    0-100km/h time?
    top speed?

and most of all the reliability. Do they have many issues with reliability because the idea of having a 2.8L v6 in a golf is awesome but dont have alot of money to keep fixing it if it breaking down all the time.

    Thanks Steve

0-100 is 7.2 for manual and a lot higher for auto
    top speed is 226kmh

The cars are over 10 years old now, and will take a considerable amount of money to bring up to scratch unless the owner has maintained the car, i.e only an enthusiast or someone anal about the mechanical condition of their cars. Plus your looking at around 10-12k for a car like that, fork out another 3-4 and you can get a mkIV GTI, imo a much better car.

please explain... not that it effects me

Given the choice, for me it's my current Mk3 VR6 or an upgrade to a Mk4 R32.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

It's a shame about the crappy mainland laws, as this statement is very true!! Mk3s are getting quite old now - I've been interested in buying another one to do up (had 3 already!), but they're all very loose and tired to drive now compared to Mk4s and I've been put off with the many I've tried out.

I had a mint one some years ago (still the best example I've come across in terms of condition), but it found its way into a pole and turned into a teepee

Cheap ones have lots of little stuff that will be broken and probably some major ones.

There is a thread on here somewhere. Buying guide to Mk3 VR6 or something. Maybe use the search feature.

                        Hey you know its true!
All the nice VR6's i.e 100k < all go for over 10k and I doubt are perfect needing at least a few hundred to get them going right.

Personally I would just get a poverty pack CL 2dr, strip it out and do a tuned 1.8T swap with an LSD and take it to the drags every week

Heater matrix is $1000 to fix, so I`d want to check that, A/C is a similar story.

Window regs fail often $150+ per reg to replace.

Thermostat housing and crack pipe should have been changed and not leak.

Manual gearbox are clunky and grind in second and reverse if car has been driven harshly.

Engine should sound healthy and pull hard. Hi ks dont hurt em, lack of maintainace and overheating does. Check the cooling system and oil.

Exhaust upgrade is ok, but take it on the freeway and see if the noise annoys you at 110?

Drivers seat will usually be ripped on the bolster.

Lookout for shonky repairs on the front end, they go fast and young people have em and they all get hit in the front.

Check if its on REVS. I wouldn`t be put off by a beautiful one that has been decently repaired. Theres not that many to choose from. I have seen em written off for minor things. good to kow what you are getting tho.

I saw the figures once and I think there was $700 or so VR6s sold here.
Only a couple of hundred were post 96, so most will be early cars.

I wouldn`t be put off by decent ks. I know of one very original car that has 230000 on it and is one of the quickest I have been in. I have been in ones with 90ks on that are rooted. Never flog em when the oil is cold seems to be the rule that keeps em fresh.

The Auto is a can of worms I`m not game enough to open. Its a very expensive auto to service or replace and they are very prone to failiure.
Plus they are a second or more slower to a hundred

Get a tidy manual one and it will be reliable and fun.

Petrol is not getting cheaper is my only words of warning.

                          Hope that helps.
