Can you not get a real visa mate. Having state sponsorship is a pain in the ar5e. I have just got off one after 2 years here and it opens loads of doors depending on what you do and family etc if you have permanent residency.
Gavin
Hi Gavin, I was trying for a 175, but never had enough points, idid not hving enough work experience, even though been a cabinetmaker for 5 years and self employedfor three, flew there TRA,going for the 176, its meant to be quicker as need to get it in before december. my daughter turns 18 then.
Hi mate, i got in as a Cabinetmaker too, there are plenty of jobs going all over the country, you won't have any trouble finding work. I chucked a sicky for a day on my last job, ended up with a new job by 4.00pm after having a look to see if there was anything closer to where i live. I was lucky with the visa points because i had worked here for over a year prior to applying so i got 5 bonus points.
As for shipping your car, i did a break down on how much it cost on here if you have a search, i think it was around $8000 all up, from door to door with rego and plates. My insurance is with Shannons, costs about $80 a month.
Are you planning on bringing alot of tools? I shipped mine inside the car, it only took 4 weeks with www.karmanshipping.co.uk - be weary of bringing power tools though, some are not allowed in.
Give me a shout if you think i can help ...
BTW your Mk2 looks awesome, i had a white '89 small bumper 16V that looked just like it years ago. Would be a shame to sell it after all that work, if i were you i'd send it over even if it means staying in Scotland for a few more weeks and saving a bit more cash to do it. Theres always the re-sale factor to consider also, you wouldn't have any trouble selling it here.
Yep, x2 about the car!
I think there's only about 15 or 20 mk2's here in WA. About half of them are GTI's, mostly private imports from the UK, South Africa, or Japan, and there's only about five 3-doors in the whole state.
I owned two of the GTI's: one UK '85 model, and my daily driver which is an Aussie delivered '90 model. Unfortunately i pitched my '85 GTI over a concrete curb and wrote it off like a proper dip$hit
I would definately bring your car over.
I'm not sure about rego for Victoria, but it's around $400 a year in WA for simple 3rd party and rego.
Not sure what it all costs with the taxes on an import sorry. As long as the car has everything on it that should be or that was a manufacturer option it should pass the pits.??
Maybe someone on here who's recently been thru the RWC ordeal could chime in and clarify?
Cheers and hope to see you in Oz soon!

If your mind's made up mate then jump on a plane!
Also there was something on adelidebrits over the weekend, that the immigration dept haven't ruled out reducing the number of Visas granted if the economics of Australia don't stay with the program.
The exchange rate for you is pretty good too ATM. If you are in the position to forward buy your Aussie Dollars, I'd be looking to lock in the rate.
Yeah bring your car mate. I left a scirocco storm in the UK and it broke my heart. My mum sold it for 700 notes :sob:
It`ll be worth the hassle. I reckon RoRo ferry is 1000 quid, no tax cos its a personal import, and you have owned it for more than a year, some annoying beurocracy with compliance in oz, usually a seat belt point and a rear high level taillight. You could prefit the aussie seat belt bar and a brakelight and save some hassle and money I reckon.
A 2 Door 16v mk2 would be woth 8 or 10 grand aussie I reckon.
Theres probably only 10 or so 2 doors in the country and I only know of 2 2door valvers.
Good luck with it all, see you down under

Agree with matt it'll be a grand to ship but you will have to pay tax + import duty based on it's value (knock up a receipt for 500 quid or less) + the cost of shipping.
So that's 1000 pounds shipping
+ 25% of 1500 = 1,375 pounds
Obviously there will be minor fees but compared to the $6K+ it would fetch here I think you'll agree you're onto a winner mate
I brought my 2 door mk2 and it's given me some great driving adventures since it got here
