Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Golf mk2 stuck in 3rd gear

    Hello
    I need some help
Last night I was driving and I shifted down from 3rd gear to 2nd and went bk up to 3rd and now it's stuck in 3rd gear...
Do I need to replace my gearbox ? If so where can I buy one or who's selling a gearbox?

I've had this happen a few times, and it's always required the gearbox to come apart.

It's something to do with the 3rd gear selector traveling too far and some pawls popping out.

Replacing the box is going to be cheaper than rebuilding it.

A MK3 gearbox might be a good option, maybe have a think about what sort of ratios you'd like in the new box.

As Pete said, if you Google 'stuck in 3rd gear broke vw' it explains how to fix.

That's true but I put 'quote' marks around the text I meant, I'll make it clearer next time.

If I was going to put a mk3 gearbox in it, what else do I need to change in the car..

The mk3 8v gearboxes are the same, nothing major to change, maybe a different sender connection but that's about it, just move you mk2 linkages and brackets across.

Double check the CVs , they should all be 100mm diameter.

It would be worthwhile to do the clutch while you're in there.
