  • Mk2 Golf GTI knocking from rear of the car?

So my Mk2 Golf has developed a problem in the past week which ids gradually becoming worse. There seems to be a knocking sound coming from underneath the rear of the car when starting off, going over bumps etc...
I am assuming it is something to do with the suspension or wheel bearings or something and I was just wondering if anyone has had the same problem and knows what It could be.

    Thanks!

Could be something to do with one of the rear shocks. Check to see if the upper mounts are tight.

x2 re strut top mounts, or the shocks themselves might be completely gone.

Otherwise it might be your rear beam bushes?

Open the tailagate, bump the car up and down and watch the top of the shocks (you might have to remove the rubber covers first).
You'll see movement if they are loose, there is an upper and a lower nut, so tightening the top one might not fix the problem.

I'd also vote for rear beam, especially if the car has been lowered. Ideally the bolts securing the beam should be slackened off before lowering, otherwise the rubber mounts (having spent 20 years in one position, and stuck to the beam) start to twist into their new position, and then destroy themselves!

Or there is someone trapped in the trunk?!!!

          Best of luck!

Busted exhaust rubber, so the bend over the axle is knocking.
