Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Golf mk2 dilemma

    Hi guys
I have a1989 golf mk2 Wolfsburg edition. Only 75,000 genuine miles on the clock, goes really well, original motor etc ,lovely condition inside and out. My father wants me to ditch this car for his 13yr old Holden Vectra, under a lot of pressure to do so. What should I do?

    Ditch your dad.

      OK, serious answer.

You already know what you want to do otherwise you wouldn't have posted on a VW forum where we all love Golfs.

Now all you need to do is convince your dad so start by telling him it's your decision, not your dads. If he wants to get rid of his Vectra then he sells it instead of forcing you to have it.

The Golf won't depreciate, parts are easily available and there is a strong community of like minded individuals always willing to give help and advice.

If the Golf breaks down it's easy for you to learn how to fix it so your mechanical knowledge improves. If the Vectra breaks down you have to take it to a mechanic because it's so complex to fix. That means more money going into someone elses pockets.

If you sell the Vectra there's more money in your dad's pocket too.

      KEEP THE GOLF.

      And post some pictures.

And bring it to the German Auto Display so we can all check it out and tell you how great it is and not to get rid of it..

      Cheers

      Paul

        Phew!
That's exactly what I wanted to hear, very reassuring advice.
I definitely won't get rid of the old girl now, never really wanted to as you so wisely pointed out. I've just had so many others around me
telling me I must be mad to hold on to such an old car.
I appreciate your sound advice very much, thank you.
I'll post some pics this week and hopefully get to the German Auto Display as well.

        Cheers

        Cal

A 13 yr old vectra might have a better heating/cooling system compared to a mk2.
It might even have better fuel econony- but I know what I'd rather have!

Sounds like your mk2 is a bit special too.

My heater works great and I average 6.6 litres. Try and beat that with your boring, souless 13 year old Vectra.

My heater works great as well and I've always been surprised how long a full tank of fuel lasts.

I agree with the soulless car bit Paul!!

I must be one of the only mk2 owners on the forum that didn't get around to fixing the heater over winter.
Those 1-2 degree mornings in the golf weren't fun.

                      Welcome to the forum Cal!

We had 4 mornings in a row where it went down to -9 so I had to get my heater working!

Sorry to hijack your thread Cal, glad to hear you're keeping your MK2. From the description you've given it sounds pretty special.

I sold mine a few years ago, always regretted it so I bought it back a couple of years later. You don't know how much you miss it until it's gone.

                        Cheers

Keep far far away from Vectra's, they're less reliable and harder to find parts for that old Golfs!
Look after your MK2 and it'll take care of you with spectacular fuel economy and driving fun.
