Iv'e looked into this a few times...
All up for me to get the car here (the owner lives in UK and will sell me the car on his arrival to sydney when he comes to live here...I pay all the shipping)

      cost $3000 shipping AUS funds
£350 customs charges in the uk 750ish
      £100 other charges charges 200ish
      800 AUS unloading + aus customs B/S
and a further 700 AUS for cleaning the car........

Then you have Reg, Import plates, all the rubbish that goes allong with it...
      ....
The law is pree 88 dont have to be complied, but it still has to go thru a tonne of road worthyness stuff..

      ADR stuff......
      Seat belts
      High Mount brake lights
      Child retraints
      ADR approved seat belts
      ARD approved windscreen
      Blah Blah Blah......
      among other things..........

also a laughing matter....pre88 golf that had wipers go back the front have to be changed aswell ..............

      So all up.......BIG $$$$$$$$

      Ive got 2 3door mk2s now...so all is well...but if anyone wants to sell another???Hit me up..LOL

      Re import from Japan aswell........
A2 golfs imported to Japan were all 5 doors.....
unless privately imported........Ive only seen 2 mk2 3 doors come out of Japanese auctions...

Just looked up how much mine cost all up, mine was a personal import when i migrated to Australia, i shipped it over with personal effects inside the car in a sole use container with www.karmanshipping.com which cost 1500 pounds with insurance.
I used a shipping company to sort out all the 'stuff' in Australia which cost all up,
            Duty/GST and Entry fees $1,320.57
            Port Charges due carrier $360.55
Wharf to Depo and empty container $330
            Container unpack $280
Container Lift off/Lift on at depot $40
AQIS Facility fee re. Vehicle $40
            Quarantine &inspection fees $168.50
            Steam cleaning $175
            Customs/AQIS Formalities $300
            Valuation $200
Transport to Garage for blue slip $66
            Blue slip coordination $150

            GST $201.66

            Total $3,632.28

My Blue slip and Compliance plate along with Child restraint points, rustproofing and weight bridgewas $1,387

Somewhere along the line i had a refund of $346.51 ???

            So we're at $4,672.77
            Plus shipping ($3000ish) $7,672.77

Then i drove it away and got it registered, paid more Tax etc and Number plates wich was $712 So thats a grand total of ............ $8,384.77

Ouch, thats more than i thought i'd paid actually!! All i can say is i like my Corrado ......//counts his pennies//.........!!

Obviously you'd pay less than me as you would Roro and less Tax on Value etc.
You could have a look on www.autotrader.co.uk for a nice 3 door.

So annoying VW only sold the more door here, and no Corrado's.

            Hope that helps.

if you dont want to have owned it for 12 months it needs to be pre '89. there is no 15 year rule anymore

Yip, as Tim says, the 15 year old rule is no more.

It sucks, no Rado's or 90 spec Golfs unless you live there for 12 months.

is the 1989 thing a standing date, or does it change with the years.? If that makes senese?

Ie will it ever be 1992 for example?

It used to be cars 15 years old, so like you're saying it would change every year.
                          Not anymore.

Only cars that are registered before 1st Jan '89 can be imported without having to of owned it overseas for a minimum of 12 months.

                          Bum.

Can you import a car that has been modded? Not engine or drivetrain but with aftermarket wheels and/or coilovers?

As for getting a Mk2 from the states, there are tons of importers bringing in old muscle cars for next to nothing so surely they could import a LHD Mk2. Then you could convert it to RHD using MK3 parts (dash, steering rack etc..)
