  • Importing a car + Qs for you Brits

another importing a car thread... lol...

I've decided that i want a second mk2... a 3 door. so since theres almost no chance of finding one here (was one for sale that i almost bought but it was too far gone condition-wise) i'm actually seriously contemplating importing one. ill be in europe in july most probably i've got a few Qs though maybe you guys could help me out plz. (and yes i know that i can only get a pre 1989 one )

Whats the deal with all the different registration plates in the UK? E-reg m-reg etc etc what do they mean? i'm after the best condition car i can find so which would be the one to go for?

Will there be any mk2's pre 1989 left in the UK that arent filled with rust from salty roads???

Is japan an alternative place to source one?

Whats the cost on the aussie end of the shipping/customs process?

id be getting it roro'd here so i guess thats about 2k sunk in shipping straight up. are there any other costs i should know about?

cheers guys, lots of questions i know sorry, wouldnt be asking if i wasnt serious about getting one though.

ps im gonna keep my current mk2 5dr too

I think you have to own it for 12 months to actually be allowed to import it?

E-reg etc denotes the year it was registered....is the prefix of the rego number.

    Try this...

20k is waaaaaaaaaay out of my budget. besides id prefer a mk2 3dr than a rado.

I will be in the UK as part of my first leg going through out Europe!

However I will be in Germany about the 22nd of July about then so I will be keen to have a look around aswell

I would also love to have a look at containers you probably could fit 2 obviously buying a larger container for it.

my quote was 1400 Pounds to import my sportline (plus import taxes!!!)

it is 1000 pounds to ship the car.
it was 400 to have the car picked up and trailered to the port
then you have to pay import duties (about another 600 bucks)

i am looking at setting $3500/4000 a side minimum before i apply to import my car.

but i never knew about this pre 89 rule...hell i may look at bringing a 3 door mk2 gti 16v over too

yeah it ends up being effin expensive hey.

tell me if im missing something here. (everything in aud)

                        2500 for the car
                        10% customs on that
                        add 2000 shipping
calculate 10% gst on all that
                        (2500 + 250 +2000) x 1.10 = $4750

You shouldnt have to pay import duty on a personal import.

If you bring 2 in a container its cheaper to bring, but more effort at unloading time.

Ones to bring pre 89 would be 2 door Mk2 GTIs, Sciroccos and Caddys.

You cant bring car parts and cars in the same container as they are cleared in different ways and you will be paying big unloading charges.
