MAF sensor on a MK2 Golf GTI need replacing?

  • MAF sensor on a MK2 Golf GTI need replacing?

    Hey my Golf has been hesitating to rev and using a lot of fuel. It will have bursts of power and then really slow down and a mechanic I talked to said it could be the airflow sensor. I was just wondering if anyone knows if there is a way to fix them or whether it will have to be replaced, and if so is it easy to do yourself?

    Your symptoms do sound a lot like a dirty MAF sensor.
    I'm not an expert on this, but I have had issues with my MAF sensor before. You may be able to resurrect it by giving it a clean with a MAF sensor cleaner- CRC make one and you should be able to pick up a can at most auto parts shops like supercheap.

      The airflow meter on the MK2 is a flap in the top of the airbox. Not like everything uses now. It's late 80s technology. With the wiring diagram you can check the wipers for dead spots, as the flap moves the resistance changes. Indicating load to the ECU.

      Google digifant and read up on it.

      Other favourites for excessive fuel usage would be the lamdba probe and the water temp sender in the top hose.

        You probably need to get someone who knows old Golfs to have a look. Luckily I have a mate who knows these things and found then fixed my stalling problem within 5 minutes. I would have taken all day and pulled most of the injection system apart.

          I read once before I think either here or on Vortex that you can swap a MAF sensor from similar era BMW's (with some modification) and it helps to increase power?
          Any advise or opinion on this?
          Is it it worth it for the power gain? (If any)
          There would be heaps of BMW's around in the wreckers.

              No worries. I wouldn't be spending money on random Air flow meters. The VW is matched to the spec of the engine. the air flow meter isn't the piece of hardware that holds back the RV motor.

                  There's nothing to clean on yours like the more modern VWs.

                  I'd be looking at the coolant temp sensor and lambda probe first if it were mine. You need to do the troubleshooting first, don't spend any money.

                      Absolutely spot on. The 535i series uses the same Air MASS Meter (not air flow meter) component which provides a voltage signal to your ECU . The diameter of the AMM intake and outlet is greater in the 535 therefore it allows more air into the engine. However because the AMM from the bmw is driving a 6 cylinder not a 1.8l 8v the spring tension in the AMM needs to be adjusted. You also need hosing to connect it to the throttle body and look into 1.5bar FPR.That in itself is alot of work not to mention the tuning!!

                      As for the revving I would...
                      1. Check vacuum lines - especially the ones connected to the FPR (Brass thing found on the end of the fuel rail - usually left hand side tucked under the throttle body.
                      2. Coolant temp sensor.
                      3. CO2 screw (brass screw on front left of throttle body pointing out horizontally)
                      4. Dizzy and lead to the coilpack

                          The exhaust manifold and downpipe are total rubbish. That's where you should start.
