Awesome, hope we can get you out to some of our events so you can talk to the local knowledge and show this puppy off.
Gav (h100vw) and Jimmy (Jmac) will likely be your go to guys.

Thanks...it is fuming like a beast at the moment. My plans are to get the motor done immediately.

One of my challenges is to shave weight (keeping it to build rate of 940kg) whilst I upgrade components, also noting that I need to ensure it looks as original as possible. It will require Gav, Jimmy and others input.

Great news, Lesley (my Mk2 GTI) has spent the last three days at the mechanic and is in A1 condition. New timing belt and sump gasket and back in fine health.

I have 20 years of grease and grime to get out of the engine bay - how to do this without decreaser tarnishing the head?

Then a thorough interior detail bringing it back to life.

Some minor mods I am considering include aftermarket air intake pipe and filter and modifying the fresh air intake to picking up through a guard or custom grill (location TBA)

Rogers Mechanical at Caboolture. Roger worked on VW's back in the day, so nice change for him to play with one again.

Roger will Project Manage my build, but not do all work himself.

So glad you named it after Lesley's first name and not her last name.

                        An update.

A week ago I broke my passenger side window. Two new windows have been ordered (clear glass) from VW Heritage and should land soon.
i have also ordered new door lock mechanisms so I don't have to slam the doors to shut them.

For the rear windows I have ordered replacements made from lexan. The rear window wiper and spoiler will go, along with the factory glass. For traditional restorers, everything that comes off is getting tagged and boxed and stored in my storage unit.

                        What next?

                        1. Carbon fibre bonnet, sunroof blank and tailgate.
                        2. All molding on doors and guards will be removed, holes filled and resprayed for the shaved look.

My budget is $20-25k. The cost of Lesley was $6.5k, leaving me about $12k to play with.

One hick up I struck today was my wife wants to purchase a late model beetle and expects me to build two cars....oh dear!!

Get a beetle that's already set up the way your wife wants, much easier that way.

Give her the beetle and put your efforts into the mk2!!
