Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Tempted by a mk2

Hey mk2 section! I have a mk3 but am considering buying a pretty straight looking unregistered mk2 that's near me for a little project. It's an 8v GTI and unfortunately auto. The auto won't engage on cold start which I'm hoping to be low transmission fluid. If I did buy it I'd like to just get it up and running first and then a manual conversion and possibly mk3 engine later on. I guess I'm asking is it really that hard to do / worth the money to get it done or should I just hold off and buy a manual?

    Cheers

I was contemplating doing the same and actually bought that mk2 on eBay but didn't get a decent transport quote and the seller relisted it. I was told to hold off and buy a manual one as the parts required to do a conversion are pricey. If you would be putting a mk3 engine in then you might be able to get a complete package for cheap and swap the whole front end. I think if you bought it and we're lucky to get hold of parts it would be a cheap clean mk2

    Hope that helps.

What a coincidence. So the choice is pick it up hope for cheap parts and have a go myself or wait for a different one. It just seems such a shame to have mk2 going for so cheap so close. Thanks mate, I might go check it out soon and figure it out from there.

Don't listen to him, it's too good for a track hack, it's got like 150 original kms... Pick it up cheap. I believe it last ended on 700 ish??

Yeah I agree it is pretty tidy. I'll try to organise a test drive for it in the next few days hopefully can negotiate him on a good price. $700 sounds nice

Thanks for the offer but Lismores a good 7 hours away from where I live and am not looking at spending a lot, would only pick one up for real cheap and local. Good luck with the sale though mate.

Sell your VR, and use the money to buy a mk 2 VR. Best of both worlds.

Haha I did think if I got a good mk2, I could use mine as the donor but I don't think I could rip mine apart although if it ever gets damaged beyond repair that's definitely an option. I don't think it'd be easy to sell mine and pick up an already converted mk2 vr? Surely there aren't that many around.

I know of about 5 in the country.

Mine will be for sale again soon, just getting to the tail end of fixing a number of small things up

Just thought I'd update this in case anyone was wondering what was going on. I intended on checking out the mk2 but before I could it sold hopefully it shows up on here. Looked like a nice car so decided I'm just going to finish off my mk3 for now.
