Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • blown diff:(

so i blew the diff today.... F*$^(#$*&^&*%#^&*#^()#)^*(&%@^&()%)^*(%#^()*#%^)&( %@#^@)#%&(%@^()&!!!!!!

not to worry though.. i got my sisters mk4 to drive and it's still under warranty

my assumption was that the diff bolt kit that was put in, hadn't been done correctly, so one of the parts fell out and chewed up the diff.
so now i have some nice holes in the housing and no oil in the box.

    LOL

Ouch! Depending on what you want in a gearbox there's a few options, the cheapest being a CHB/E box out of a Cordoba.
    Only $125 at Imlachs.

If your box is something special you can rebuild it into the CHB/E box casing.

If you're going to toss that one in the bin, I'm always on the lookout for 020 parts to add to my collection.

Well I have a CHB for some unknown reason:S

Would LOVE a 2Y!! Original for my valver but hard to find

It al depends on the extent of the damage. The gears may be chewed also, I don't know.

Ill try to take it to the guys who did the g-box and get it all under warranty seeing as they did put the diff kit in.

Ratio's are awesome, after 2nd gear its 5/600rpm between to the next gear.
            What are the CHB's like?

Actually driving relatively sensible for once!!
Thinking about it. after the box rebuild, I had an issue with it, so it went back. They said a bearing had lost some balls.... So maybe some balls were still in the box and they worked its way to the diff after months of driving.

so turns out the ~20mm hardened and ground diff shaft cr*pped itself. not happy
BUT the diff teeth aren't damaged one bit, Woo!
must have had a decently hard life, before my ownership.. or just the shoddy germans!!

                      more money down the sinker

Apologies if this annoys you, but how much did you pay for the initial rebuild? (PM me if you want)
Was it a full on, replace every internal part of the box?

Scares me to think what my box is like inside after 300K.
