Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Sweet mate. I'm waiting on price from Camden GTi for a OEM one but what you have made is inspiring!
Can I ask how you made them? Did you use a mold or just cut the urethane?
How easy was it to disassemble and re install?
      Cheers ,

Thanks guys for the praise, but it wasnt that hard, just used a lathe witha bit of help from my neighbor and some teflon/nylon i had, i do have a hoist which makes getting the piece in and out alot easier, but u could do it with a ramp. Took me a couple of goes on the linkage adjustment to get that right when i put it back in, but now i have all my gears, then i had a slight crunch from 1st to second if i changed quick (couldnt do that before) but have solved that by dumping the gearbox oil and using ATF to help the syncro rings work. I am a dual trade Instrument tech/ electrician so ive only ever done minimal training with a lathe (week course 20yrs ago). if you can wind a handle and use a vernier you can make theses bushes. The kit does come with the bush closer to the shifter aswell i think and a heap of other little bits, mine all look ok. good luck.

I'm not that handy with a lathe- only what I learned in wood work 20 odd years ago too!! haha, plus I dont have access to one.

I Still havent heard back from Camden GTI on a OEM set so..might have to wait to order one from GAP.
Anybody else know where to track a set?

I will do the change over myself though.. that is a challenge I will take on!

I changed the oil to Penzoil SIN ( fully Synthetic ) day before yesterday and have noticed a difference in the shift. Still have the second gear crunch if you change to quickly. 5th gear is a bastard to find sometimes cause of the worn out bushing but really smooth change otherwise.

yeah, i couldnt get reverse and had to bloody push the car backward out of a park, but am pretty chuffed that the ATF got rid of the crunch 1st to 2nd in about 1/2 hr of driving. I remembered ford doing it in the 80s with their less than perfect 4 speeds for the same reasons, i will have to change it out more regulary than you would with the synthetic, but its not a daily drive anyway, plus i had the ATF in the shed.Veedub machine in the UK do a kit aswell as someone pointed out to me earlier.

Yep- I will have to look at an upgrade kit at the same time. GAP have one probably the same- has a shift weight included for shorter throw.
                Cheers.
Off to play change oil pan gaskets and filter and a few other things!
