The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • New Owner Advice, My first but not last question!

Hi All, am a new MK2 owner purchased the lovely Silver MK2 in the For sale section. Found the lowered suspension to be very harsh and a bit bouncy, also scrubbed a little bit on bigger bumps at speed. its fitted with KYB shocks (excell g) was told short stroke but couldnt find a listing for short stroke, and h and r springs, found listing for sport springs and it said approx 35mm lowered. Was thinking some hot tuning coil overs so i can easilly get the height right. I know low looks super cool but i want it to work aswell. was also thinking of trying to get some second hand standard springs and trying them to see what the standard suspension was like. My daily drive is an BA XR8 ute with some mods so the GTI will probably never seem as fast and the suspension in my ute seems alot more forgiving (Stock XR8 springs with KONI shocks). Would like to achieve a nice ride with reasonable handling without the harshness over sharp edged bumps. Noticed the rear spring has the top half of the coils wound alot closer than the bottom half and they seem to be basically bound up at rest. Any help or tips appreciated.

Also can extractors/headers be fitted to the 8v, do they make any difference. im told i have a 276 degree cam and am hoping that id why the idle is a bit rough (never seemed like stalling) and the airbox has had some extra holes added. also filter is a red unit with a mesh (B and R i think).

Anyone using Bosch Platinum 4 plugs, they are fitted, how long do they last?

    Kits for Gearbox linkage slop?

How to reset trip computer, my fuel economy was getting so good i had to stop before the tank started to fill itself.............LOL.

Other than that how can I get rid of the big cheesy grin i now have

    Cheers Mark

If you want a good ride & still be lowered you'll be best off with either some uprated dampers with lowering springs. For example a kit like this; Awesome - H&R Cup Kit - Golf II, Jetta II - 08/83>91 - Typ 19E
Or you could fit stock shocks with lowering springs.
Kit for gearbox - NEW COMPREHENSIVE GEAR SHIFT REPAIR KIT 5 speed GOLF MK2 JETTA [GSRK-G2-5S] - £18.27 : veedubmachine, Volkswagen Audi Seat Skoda Porsche spares and accessories

As for the engine mods, a MK2 with an 8v is never going to be a really fast car (without spending a lot) so just enjoy the handling & adopt a new driving style. Don't lift!!

Other than that the grin is permanent. Sorry...

        Enjoy your new ride!
That car looks fantastic, great wheels too.

Plenty of good advice here , just take your time to explore the forums.

Try German Auto Parts for pretty much anything you need for your MK2- just make sure you pick your model for correct parts.
They are in America- but with the exchange rates at the moment - CHEAPER.

Congrats on buying a minter like that, I'm very jealous!

In regard to extractors, the best bang for buck option would be to get the exhaust headers/manifold and dual downpipe off a MK3 (GL?) as they run a 4 into 2 'extractor' set-up. AFAIK it'll need a bit of mod work to make it all fit nicely.

Not going to add 50bhp like it would on your Falcon, but a nice improvement.

          Enjoy

            Ask benough about his h&r's.
I got my dampening adjustable h&r's for $850 landed (haven't had time to put em in yet).
From what I gather there a little firmer and the ones i got are 30mm lower than standard.
I think there Koni shocks (h&r spec) and h&r springs

Thanks Guys for the positive responses, i have ripped out the linkage with the 3 rubbery bushes, the big one for the shaft from the shifter was flogged right out to the point i had to get out and select reverse from the linkage. Will be machining up some new bushes out of teflon tomorrow. ( will buy the kit for future, need to get on road for missus manual driving lessons before next roster)Gonna jack the rear from the side to see how much is hitting, may get away with a trim if its 5mm or less or ill get the lip rolled. gonna post pic of the rear spring when i get a wheel off. Gotta give the wheels a good clean. Said somethin about a turbo kit to the missus, got that funny look they do! cheesy grin still intact. Anyone used the hot tuning coil overs?

Hot tuning's are good for the price but are a little bouncy and stiff. If you are after coilovers the best advice is to buy the best ones you can afford because the cheaper end of the market have a set spring rate which is usually a bit stiff for road use. A friend is selling these http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f24/...ers-59167.html some of the best coilovers on the market with an amazing ride & tonnes of adjustment.

Pictures pictures please! Another Mk 2 in SA! Is it red?? I keep seeing one in Adelaide and do a double take every time as I think mine has been stolen and then pollished!! When you order a Dash cover, order two!!!! Having read it again, I see yours is silver! Look out for the red ones!

Sorry dont seem to be able to upload pics directly from PC on this forum (tell me if ya can and im being dumb!) need an url, cant take any credit for the car yet as its how i purchased, have fixed a few things but basically just tidying some things up. New teflon/nylon bushes in gear linkage bracket work great, very direct feel and changes gear great, much better than the flogged out originals.

                    Cheers
