Ineffective indicators.

I have an issue where the indicators are not working. The indicator light is constantly on but really dim, and even when I disconnect the indicator stalk it stays on. When I try to indicate the light on dash cones on but no flashing or indicators work. When the car is off, I don't get park light to work off the stalk ( left/right ).

I have removed the flasher unit, that stopped the dim light on the dash but I still have no indicators

thoughts? I'm leaning toward flasher unit failure.

Think I worked it out, I had the hazards switch fall apart in my hand and I think that it completes the circuit. Must look out of one. I wonder how long I can get away in Sydney traffic without one?

Put the flasher unit back in. Does it click when you turn the indicators on? If no then it's not getting any power.

Because you're not getting any lights on, the fault has to be something common to all the lights - indicator or flasher unit.

What worries me is you're getting a faint green light when it's not used which indicates a poor earth somewhere else so the indicator lights are being used to earth another circuit.

Try taking out the bulbs one at a time to see which one is being used to feedback power from another circuit. In theory if you remove one of the bulbs and the faint green light stops then that bulb if feeding a current back into the indicator switch. Look for a short circuit along the wires that lead to that bulb.

I have the opposite problem. At night the green light comes on occasionally, nice and bright when I'm driving along country roads - ie when I'm not using the indicators. None of the outside indicator lights come on so I take it as VW's way of telling me everything is OK (green light).

Hey Paul,

Looking at it, the light on the hazard switch (the bit that would otherwise flash when they were on) has also fallen off - so I am assuming that may have changed the resistance across the circuit. I'll try to get another switch or stalk tomorrow and see how I go from there. Your logic sounds right but.

I am assuming it is MK2, it is a wedge shaped one on the top of the steering column.
