  • New turbo garrett GT 25/30r turbo setup

Hi everyone, i have decided to change the turbo setup on my mk2 GTI 8v.

Ill post up updates as the new setup progresses along.

The turbo im using is a larger garrett GT25/30r which although only flows marginally more power than the current vf22 IHI turbo with garrett GT internals it has a better bolt pattern and flange than the IHI which has had issues with distortion and gaskets leaking under the high temperatures associated with a short manifold. The original manifold has a very short runner length of 75mm on number three cylinder from the head to the turbo. With the exhaust leaks requiring stripping down and machining the manifold i am going to mount the new turbo above the gearbox!

The first pic shows the original setup at the last vw nationals. And the second pic shows where i am going to mount the turbo in the future.

"I'm happy with the mk2 and am going to get back to work on the Scirocco"

Wasn't that what you said to me young fella??

Guess the exh manifold has the leaks again? You're not going to pull the head off while you're at it and do the bigger valve thing are you? Or are you??!

Side mount.. Basically. (Too obvious to sound right but that's what i've seen them called..)

Toyota blowers aren't good for much more than about 12psi from what i hear. It i put a blower on it, it'll be massive boost and i'll be using a Eaton screw blower!

"from what i hear...." go ahead and do it... then you can tell us for sure - PS - my buddy is running one in his 'rolla at 13 psi... its FAST

If you are going for mounting the turbo a way over there above the gearbox, that'll make for a lot of stress and strain on various parts of the manifold, especially once you get hte thing glowing red hot and the allowable stress drops right down.

i just searched for a lil bit for a picture of a custom turbo manifild i was thinking of that may suit you but i coudnt find it - might be able to later tonight

i agree "gldgti" the manifold will be under quite a bit of stress but i have allready thought about all the issues and benefits of mounting it above the gearbox. Firstly i will be adding a support bracket up from the gearbox to the manifold triangulating the brackets mounting points for strength and also incorporating a bracket on the down pipe to the manifold. Pics to come shortly.

Well this fella i used to know told me that his half sister's cousin used to use one.

Haha just kidding. But seriously, not a bad idea although i'd hate to waste my money on one only to find out that it's no good.

Ok we're finished hyjacking your thread now, Marty.

A bit of progress, today i machined out the manifold flange to mount to the cylinder head. Its out in 12mm thick mild steel plate and is match ported to the head.

For those who are interested i match ported it by doing a simply process. With the flange outline and bolt holes machined i bolted the flange to the ported head on the car with a thick layer of silicon on it. I sprayed some wax onto the head to act as a release agent and let it set. Upon removing the flange the exact outline of the port shape is left on the flange, i then scribed carefully around the port shape and machined the ports out.

Heres a pic of todays work.

                              thats a nice looking flange.

rather thick, but i'm guessing, cause it's going to be quite a large/heavy manifold??
