Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Tim's golf gti

    Hey all,

I thought I'd open a thread just to follow any changes I make to my gti, or any questions I need to ask in terms of maintenance, upgrades, etc.

I've ordered a silver golfball shifter from tmtuning, and plan on getting a new headunit and front speakers this weekend. Next week I hope to get the front right tire replaced so that it wears evenly with the new front left. I'll also get a quote on the front right quarter panel dent.

I've decided to put some of my spare cash towards my tiny debt for the car, but by the time I work out what I want to buy for it, I'll have had the time to save up!

    Few pics to start.

Big list of every little thing that needs to be done on the car to make it perfect and any mods made:
    • Blacken bumpers/plastic bits DONE
    • Rewire rear speakers DONE
    • Alpine headunit install DONE
    • Chrome golfball gearstick DONE
    • Rear window brake light DONE
    • Aerial movement & reception DONE
    • Lowering DONE
    • Front numberplate bent DONE
    • Front speakers DONE
    • Rear badges loose DONE
    • Timing belt cover DONE
    • K&N Air Filter DONE
    • VW wheel centercaps DONE
    • Antenna adapter DONE
    • Oil droplets leak
    • Holes in front seats
    • Hazard lights button replace
    • Rear bumper scrapes/colour
    • Front bumper scrape
    • Bonnet paint chips
    • Front right dint
    • 15/16" wheels

    Cheers
    Tim

Dude that car looks great, especially the cabin.

It looks (to me) like it's sitting too high. Maybe it's an illusion with the wheels.

I like those wheels but yeah they accentuate the height. Very clean GTI!

Nice mk2. The wheels are a bit much imo but they'd look fine if the car was lowered a bit. Are they 16" or 17"?

nice mk2 man, they look like 17s, which suit the mk2 but you gotta drop it to get the stance right.

Yea they're 17s, and I do plan on getting coilovers for them, just not sure when I'll do that.

Probably bumped into you a few times in various threads.
I think I can remember you from the Battlefield 2 threads at one stage.

Car looks good mate. nice to see a mk2 on something other than the terrible stock metal rims that everyone threw out back in the day.

Small problem maybe, was driving around tonight for a few hours and the alternator/battery light started coming on intermittently. Not sure if its a loose connection being knocked around on the bumpy roads or not. Would come and go every now and then over about an hour. Ideas?

edit: Had a look under the bonnet today, one of the belts around what I thought was the alternator had tiny cracks between each of the teeth. Would this make it slip or give off a warning note? I'll go for a drive later and see if it still happens.

edit: And what are my options for front speakers? Links to where I can buy door speaker shrouds? If I can't have front speakers then I was just thinking of upgrading the rear 6x9s...

Installed my new alpine headunit with the help of oliver today, was a bit of effort with all the wiring - old conections ect.

Really happy with the sound quality and looks great, aswell as the ipod connection.

Also got a wave from a blue jetta today aswell as passed black polo gti with VW GTI plates.
