Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • what have I done!

    bought a mk 2, that's what I've done.

    The only rust.

    Already 'debaged' the rear.

It's an 85 GL, 1.8 carby, PAS, 5 Speed (with warn linkages ) and aftermarket sunroof (urgh). and no pass seat. I've got a few parts lying around to what on it.

I often sit and wonder what the hec I'm doing to myself...

Don't know what I'm going to do with it yet. Suggestions??
Won't be doing anything till exams are over, and the Audi's gone.

    Give it to me?

    Mad rally car?
Put all the badges back on then replace the engine with a 20vt for the ultimate sleeper
Full R32 conversion including AWD system? (supercharged of course)...

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

hahah. Actually I just thought before about making it into a rally car. Has the ride height for it! hahah.

Thanks for the offer matt, but I've got a pair of nice cordy fronts in my garage, and well, I dont sit in the back!

20VT sleeper sounds like a good idea though..

Put later model doors on it so you have the full glass and no quarters.

Or feel free to buy my GTI off me so you have all the trimmings

This is a gem. I did one up and it went like the clappers and handled like a go kart. Awesome car.
Fit injection and get rid of the Zenith carbie, they are a real let down.

I'd like go fit a whole mk 3 2L with injection actually. But i'm worried about the electrics/immobiliser/coding/ECU issues.

I've heard Seat Ibiza GTI 2Ls have uncoded looms, and are better for conversions to earlier cars??/

How much wider do Mk3 rear beams make it? And is it a direct swap?
                      Euro look 2... Mk2 love!

From memory the rear beam width is about 30m/m wider than the Mk2 and is a direct swap!!!
Go nicer with a twincam than a 3.2!!! The golf would be better balanced with the 4 cylinder. I got some great results in my 87 Mk2 GTI and that was only with a 2E sc. All in the suspension, rather than mucking around with motors. I loved driving my Mk2 a hell of a lot more than driving any of my Mk1s!

Wouldnt mind getting a little sleeper myself, thats what i would do mate. Long story short my dads mate owns a wreckers in the Uk and they crush things that we would love to have over here. Get this he just crushed 3 complete Cupras!!!!! with ABF and all. I have told my dad next couple that come in i want the engine , box looms the lot out of them and ill crate them over here

Yeah 2E Early G3 uncoed loom, or SEAT GTI one is the best swop.
You`ll need the whole car loom as your fusebox is different and you`ll need the efi pump.
Even a Cordoba 1.8 setup singlepoint would be better than your carby, easy swop and you can just bolt the manifold to your motor.

Or if you cant be arsed with wiring ABF on twin carbys or throttlebodies
